Seen from the cliff, a tall rocky needle rises amidst a rough blue-purple sea. Smaller points accompany it, while the very high horizon leaves only a narrow strip of pink and gray sky. Signed and dated 86 Claude Monet, this almost square oil on canvas measuring 65.5 × 65.6 cm belongs to the Rau Collection for UNICEF and corresponds to Wildenstein 1087.

A vertical pyramid surrounded by the sea

The large monolith is placed slightly to the left of the center and rises almost to the horizon. Secondary reefs draw an arc around it, from the lower edge to the right. The bird's eye view removes all human presence and reduces the sky to a minimum.

Blue, green, mauve and white roam the ocean surface. On the rocks, Monet superimposes brown, purple, red and dark green. Short, changing touches simultaneously render the roughness of the stone and the circulation of foam.

The almost square framing concentrates the confrontation: the rock rises, the sea spreads around it and the sky provides no escape.
