Claude Monet · Belle-Île · 1886 · W1085
From a high viewpoint on the wild coast of Belle-Île, a tall golden rocky needle dominates the sea while other reefs disperse to the right. The waves draw crowns of white foam around them, and the light transforms the stone into yellows, oranges and reds. This oil on canvas measuring 65.5 × 81.5 cm, painted in 1886, is kept at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Caracas and corresponds to Wildenstein 1085.

Look at the work
The largest rock rises slightly to the left of the center and cuts the horizon line. A narrow dark mass responds to it in the shadows, then several reefs lower lead the gaze towards the right edge. The sea occupies almost the entire surface, with only a strip of very clear sky.
The rocks combine golden yellow, ocher, red and purple; the water changes from deep blue to turquoise and green. White touches in short arcs circulate the foam around the reefs and give an immediate measure of the swell.
Monet does not describe a still coast: the Pyramids seem to emerge from a field of currents, shadows and shards which recompose with each wave.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The main needle extends beyond the horizon and gives the scale of the site. Its weight is balanced by the small reefs arranged diagonally to the right.
Instead of a uniform outline, Monet juxtaposes yellows, reds, browns and purples. The illuminated side and the shadow slit become readable by color temperature.
White marks do not form a simple border. They surround, separate and connect the rocks, making you feel the Atlantic surf.
Reference image
A single exact photograph of W1085, taken in front of the work at the Caracas Museum, is used as the sole medium and throughout the file. The real WebP measures 956 × 713 px; its native definition is preserved without artificial enlargement.
It must remain the first anchor point without being refocused. Its relationship with the horizon and the neighboring dark mass precisely identifies W1085.
Their succession creates depth and prevents the large needle from becoming an isolated silhouette.
Overseas, turquoise, green and mauve must remain distinct. A uniform blue sea would remove the effect of changing light.
Documented benchmarks
The photograph taken at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Caracas documents the 1886 version, oil on canvas measuring 65.5 × 81.5 cm, classified Wildenstein 1085.
During his stay in Belle-Île in 1886, Monet took up these rocky needles several times. W1085 is distinguished by its horizontal format and the large golden pyramid placed in front of the horizon.
Monet worked on the island in the fall of 1886, confronted with wind, rain and the continuous movement of the Atlantic. The rocks allow him to study the same structure under different lights.
The reproduced version belongs to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Caracas. Its dimensions, date and reference W1085 make it possible to distinguish it from the versions from Moscow, Copenhagen and Rolandseck.

This horizontal navy is suitable for a living room, office or dining room. A midnight blue, light sand or mineral gray wall and a warm brown frame reinforce the contrast between sea and rock.
