Off the coast of Belle-Île, three rocky pyramids resist a rough Atlantic sea. The white waves surround the needles, the low sky closes the horizon and the curved touches repeat the movement of the water. Painted in the fall of 1886, this oil on canvas measuring 65 × 81 cm is kept at the Pushkin Museum and corresponds to Wildenstein 1084.

The needles of Port-Coton caught in the wild sea

The rocks form an oblique chain from the large mass on the left to the isolated needle on the right. No shoreline is visible: the observer faces the reefs from the coast, with the ocean occupying almost the entire surface.

Purple, brown and dark green shape the stone. The water mixes blue, turquoise, gray and white in thick touches. The light comes less from the sky than from the foam, which draws the currents around each rock.

Monet does not treat the Pyramids as immobile monuments: their contours seem continually redrawn by waves, mist and light.
