Auvers-sur-Oise Town Hall on July 14Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

The small white town hall of Auvers appears between two rows of trees, decorated with tricolor flags and garlands for the national holiday. Van Gogh nevertheless paints a silent square, without crowds or parades.

Look at the work

A national holiday in a strangely calm village

The light facade closes the perspective in the center of the canvas. Two tall trees frame it like pillars, while barriers and ground lines lead towards the entrance. Red, white and blue pennants punctuate the dominant greens and yellows.

Van Gogh was staying at the Ravoux inn, located on the town hall square. On July 14, 1890, the building was decorated with flags for the national holiday, but the artist did not represent any inhabitants. The festive decor thus becomes a study of light, architecture and cold colors.

The flags announce the celebration, but the empty square retains the silent concentration of the landscapes of Auvers.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The composition is based on the flexible symmetry of the trees, the small central facade and the network of lines which crosses the foreground.

01

A guided perspective

Barriers, paths and trunks converge towards the town hall. The building seems modest, but its central position gives it all its importance.

02

Tricolor signs

The flags and roundels are painted in quick touches of red, white and blue. These little accents are enough to precisely date the scene.

03

A place without crowds

The absence of characters lets the large yellow and green areas breathe. Architecture and vegetation become the actors in the painting.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The work is cataloged F790 and JH2108. It belongs to a private collection and represents the place where Van Gogh resided in Auvers.

Date

July 14, 1890

The flaunting of the town hall allows the motif to be directly associated with the national holiday, less than two weeks before the painter's death.

Location

Facing the Ravoux Inn

Van Gogh occupied a small attic room in the inn located on this square. He regularly passed in front of the town hall during his stay.

Collection

A work in private hands

The painting was particularly known in the collection of Leigh B. Block in Chicago. It does not belong to the collections of the Musée d'Orsay.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must respect the geometry of the facade, the numerous lines of the foreground and the small flags without hardening the touch.

  • The white town hall and its blue-green roof in the center
  • The trunks which frame the building and punctuate the depth
  • Flags, roundels and tricolor garlands
  • The yellows of the soil and the light greens of the vegetation
