Cloud reflections, MoMA triptych W1972 -1974hand painted reproduction

Over more than twelve meters, three panels bring together water, clouds and water lilies in a landscape without shore or horizon. The central part lights up with blue, green and lavender; on the left, the reflections become darker; on the right, red and green vegetation gradually absorbs the light. on the right, red and green vegetation gradually absorbs the light. On the right, red and green vegetation gradually absorbs the light. On the right, red and green vegetation gradually absorbs the light. Monet no longer guides the gaze towards a distance: he immerses it in the changing surface of the pool.

Look at the work

A 12.76 meter panorama takes your eyes from the plant shadow to the light of the clouds

The triptych reads like a continuous image, but each panel has a distinct rhythm. On the left, the deep blue-green shapes form a dense entrance. In the center, light reflections unfold around groups of water lilies. On the right, reds, browns and greens tighten the space again.

Clouds are never outlined by an outline. They appear as lavender, cream and pale blue layers caught under the floating leaves. This overlay reverses the usual depth: what appears to be the sky is a reflection in the water, while the water lilies actually occupy the surface.

The viewer does not contemplate the pool from the outside: the width of the triptych forces him to turn his gaze and enter into the movement of reflections.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Three panels designed as a single environment

Each canvas measures approximately 200 × 424.8 cm. Together, they reach 1,276 cm wide. The connections remain visible, but colors, clouds and groups of water lilies circulate from one panel to another.

02

A completely removed horizon

No edge fixes the top or bottom of the scene. Horizontal leaves indicate surface area, while large areas of color suggest reflections. Space remains deliberately oscillating between flatness and depth.

03

A material accumulated over several years

MoMA indicates that Monet worked and took up these large compositions from 1914 until his death. Impasto, corrections and layers must remain visible in a faithful oil reproduction.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference photograph measures 4,273 × 817 px. It shows the complete MoMA triptych and has been encoded as a true WebP to its native definition, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A progression of density

The center breathes more than the ends. The dark masses thus frame a vast luminous area without forming a regular decorative edge. This progression gives direction to the panorama.

Color02

Deep green, blue, lavender and rust

The cold scale dominates, but the right side introduces warm red-browns and greens. These accents prevent the monumental composition from becoming uniform and modulate the light along its entire length.

Matter03

Gestures that change scale

Leaves and flowers receive relatively short touches; clouds and reflections are constructed by much broader gestures. The difference in scale between these brands produces immersion.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This information concerns the triptych of the Museum of Modern Art, inventory 666.1959.ac and Wildenstein issues 1972 to 1974.

Identification01

MoMA 666.1959.ac, W1972 -1974

The set includes three oils on canvas of 200 × 424.8 cm each, or approximately 200 × 1,276 cm in total. The three panels correspond to Wildenstein numbers 1972, 1973 and 1974.

Great decorations02

An enveloping project started in 1914

Monet imagines panels capable of surrounding the viewer with water, flora and sky. He built a large workshop in Giverny in 1915 to work on these monumental formats.

Collection03

Acquired by MoMA in 1959

Remaining in the workshop then passed on to Michel Monet, the triptych passes through the Katia Granoff gallery. The Museum of Modern Art acquired it in 1959 thanks to Mrs. Simon Guggenheim Fund.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact set of MoMA, inventory 666.1959.ac and W1972 -1974
  • The exceptional panoramic ratio of 200 × 1,276 cm
  • The connections between the three panels respected without breaking continuity
  • The progression from blue-green to lavender and red-brown

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Deep blue, sea green, lavender, dull gold and rust give this reproduction an enveloping presence. The very panoramic format is suitable for a large open wall; a reduction must retain the width of the whole to preserve the original experience.
