Rain in Étretat W1044hand painted reproduction

Under oblique rain, the Porte d'Aval and the Aiguille d'Étretat blend into a blue-gray curtain. The clear beach and turquoise sea occupy the foreground, while the cliff loses its contours in the atmosphere. Painted in 1886, this oil on canvas measuring 60.7 × 73.7 cm is kept at the Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo under the number NG.M.00368 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1044.

Look at the work

The rain brings the sea, the sky and the cliff together in the same light

The cliff extends from the left and ends with the large arch of the Downstream Gate. Behind it, the Needle appears as a paler shape. The beach line crosses the bottom of the painting without interrupting the general movement of the water.

Clear diagonals run across the sky and give a visible direction to the rain. Blues, greens and grays are mixed across the entire surface; a few mauve and pink accents prevent the sea fog from becoming monochrome.

Monet does not only paint a site in the rain: he paints the rain as a material that transforms the distance, the colors and even the solidity of the cliff.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

An arch almost absorbed in the atmosphere

The Downstream Gate remains identifiable, but its outline dissolves in values close to the sky and the sea. This ambiguity gives the motif its power.

02

The repeated diagonal of the downpour

The inclined features of the sky extend visually into the swell. They unify the two large areas and give rhythm to the surface.

03

A beach reduced to a few clear passages

The shoreline is not detailed; it serves as a threshold between the viewer and the sea, with very free touches of beige, gray and white.

Composition01

Maintain the fusion of the Door and the Needle

The two formations must remain legible without hard contours, like successive silhouettes in the rain.

Color02

Preserve the turquoise greens of the sea

They give depth under the grays of the sky and distinguish the water from the cliff without sudden breakage.

Matter03

Keep the oblique streaks of the sky

These directional keys make the downpour visible; they should not be smoothed into a uniform gradient.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Nasjonalmuseet documents Rain in Étretat, oil on canvas from 1886, 60.7 × 73.7 cm, inventory NG.M.00368 and catalog Wildenstein 1044.

Pattern01

The Downstream Gate and the Needle in the downpour

The museum emphasizes that the chosen angle partially merges the Aiguille du fond with the monumental arch, very often painted by Monet in Étretat.

Acquisition02

The first Monet acquired by a public collection

The painting was purchased in 1890 after its presentation at the Kristiania Autumn Exhibition, on the recommendation of the Norwegian painter Erik Werenskiold.

Market03

A work sent by Theo van Gogh

Employed by Boussod and Valadon, Vincent's brother sent four French paintings to Kristiania, including two Monets; the museum chooses this rainy view.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1044 version
  • Downstream Gate in the rain
  • The Needle melted in the distance
  • Clear diagonals of downpour
