A fiery Venice where colorful facades stretch into the water

The house on the left forms a column of balconies and blue windows. The lighter central facade recedes towards the bridge. To the right, the pale trunk and dark foliage cut out the sky and balance the density of the architecture.

The reflections descend in long touches of turquoise, green, pink and purple. The small bridge is placed near the bottom, which lengthens the channel and reinforces the verticality of the painting. The gondola constitutes the dark point which activates this depth.

W1762 transforms the channel into a column of light: the stones and their reflections belong to the same colored movement.

The Rio della Salute appears in three paintings cataloged W1761 to W1763. The MB-Mon-30 version is distinguished by its more bold colors and by the strong opposition between warm facades and blue sky.

A view taken from the water

Monet was driven in a gondola to find his location. The narrow canal, bridge and high walls make up a view impossible to obtain from a large square or an open platform.

A painting taken up in Giverny

After his ten-week stay in 1908, Monet brought the Venetian views back to his studio. He reworked them before the 1912 exhibition, superimposing luminous memory and pictorial construction.

Windows and balconies are built in small superimposed marks. In the water, gestures lengthen. This difference in rhythm separates the stone from the reflection without drawing an outline.
