Look at the work

Water becomes a test surface for touches and reflections

The river fills almost half of the canvas. Horizontal lines of blue, gray, ocher and pink follow the current; the dark silhouettes of the bank extend into vertical reflections which interrupt this movement.

The light bank forms a long diagonal under the trees. The five spaced walkers give a measured rhythm to the landscape, while the red house and the fence anchor the background in the life around Paris.

Rive de la Seine is an oil on canvas of 32 × 46 cm painted near Paris between May and July 1887. Referenced F293/JH1269, the work is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0077V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum describes this small transportable study as a touch laboratory. Van Gogh varies his gesture according to each element: elongated lines for water, dots for trees and plants, wider touches for the sky.

01

Each area has its own writing

The long streaks of the river contrast with the tight points of the vegetation and the softer masses of the sky. The difference in gesture makes it possible to immediately identify the materials.

02

Reflections connect figures to water

Under each walker, a small dark vertical descends into the river. These accents give the surface its depth while maintaining its horizontal rhythm.

03

The clear bank is the pivot of the composition

Placed between water and trees, it receives the characters and captures the light. Its diagonal leads to the right without letting the view become a simple succession of bands.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

References F293/JH1269, the format of 32 × 46 cm and the inventory s0077V1962 identify this Bank of the Seine. It belongs to Van Gogh's Parisian research on Asnières and should not be confused with the other banks and boats of 1887.

Outdoors

A small study that is easy to transport

The museum emphasizes that Van Gogh favored the countryside and worked outside along the Seine. The compact format allowed him to easily carry canvas and equipment.

Pointillism

A method observed then freely transformed

Van Gogh borrows the separation of keys from pointillists, but refuses uniformity: dots, dashes and broad strokes are adapted to the subject represented.

Reflections

Color describes water without smoothing it

Blue, green, ocher and pink remain visible side by side. Their juxtaposition suggests the vibrations of light and the reflections of the shore.
