À propos de l’œuvre

La rivière, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Vétheuil · 1881 · W703

The River W703hand painted reproduction

At dusk, a wooded islet stands out in the center of a river covered with yellow, blue and green reflections. A red boat appears almost furtively in the lower left corner, while a few branches receive the last rays of the sun. Signed Claude Monet at the bottom right, this oil on canvas measuring 54 × 73 cm, painted in 1881, is kept at the Museum Barberini under the number MB-Mon-11 and corresponds to Wildenstein 703.

Look at the work

The last bursts of evening around an islet on the Seine

The bank line enters from the left then bypasses a central group of trees. The sky and water occupy almost equivalent surfaces, connected by reflections. The small red boat cuts the foreground without immediately becoming descriptive.

Pale yellows and pinks light up the sky, while the water brings together blue, green and purple. The trees are made of rapid vertical lines, with a few branches reddened by the low sun. The material remains open and deliberately visible.

The work appears to be executed in the urgency of a disappearing light, but his signature states that Monet considered this free surface to be a fully completed painting.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A form reduced to the essentials

Trees, shore, sky, water and boat are suggested by a very condensed vocabulary. However, the table maintains a clear depth thanks to changes in direction of the key.

02

The red boat as a discreet accent

The Museum Barberini notes that this boat is difficult to recognize at first glance. Its warm color is enough to fix the foreground and give a minimal human presence.

03

A questioning of academic finish

The brushstrokes remain apparent and some shapes appear incomplete. Monet transforms this appearance of sketch into definitive language, centered on perception and gesture.

Reference image

Read this specific version

A single exact image of W703 is used throughout the file and as the sole media for the product. The real WebP measures 2560 × 1878 px and retains the native definition available without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Preserve the wooded island in the center

It separates sky and water while leaving two luminous passages around it. Moving it would cause the calm rhythm of the composition to lose.

Color02

Preserve the small red boat at the bottom left

It must remain readable only after observation. Enlarging it or detailing it excessively would transform the colorful accent into a genre scene.

Matter03

Keep yellow highlights in dark water

These keys indicate evening light and connect the river to the sky. Uniformly blue water would erase the precise time from the landscape.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Museum Barberini documents The River, oil on canvas signed from 1881, 54 × 73 cm, MB-Mon-11 inventory and Wildenstein 703 catalog.

Moment01

A painted evening before the sun disappeared

The museum describes an impulsive execution where a few branches take on a red glow. The palette and touch render the brevity of the last rays.

Status02

A finished painting despite its sketch appearance

The signature at the bottom right indicates that Monet claims this open invoice as definitive. However, the work was never exhibited during his lifetime.

Provenance03

From Michel Monet to the Hasso Plattner collection

The painting goes through Michel Monet, André Barbier, several sales and a Japanese collection. It joined the art market in 2014 before entering the collection presented at the Museum Barberini.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 703 version
  • The wooded islet in the center of the river
  • The red boat barely visible at the bottom left
  • The last yellow and red reflections of the evening
