A narrow channel leads the eye under a small stone bridge, between pale pink facades and a mass of blue-green trees. Monet paints this version of the Rio della Salute in a clear light that dissolves details without erasing the balconies, windows and arch. The water takes up the purples of the architecture and the greens of the foliage: perspective is born more from reflections than from drawing.
Look at the work
The house on the left rises almost to the upper edge. Its overlapping balconies and dark windows give the scale of the canal. To the right, the foliage forms a large rounded counterweight; between the two, a light facade leads towards the bridge.
The arch sits very low in the composition and opens a small bright area at the bottom. Vertical touches of green, purple and pink extend the walls into the water, while a dark gondola slides near the bottom edge.
In W1761, Venice is not described stone by stone: it is reconstructed by the colors that water reflects.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Monet takes this channel from a viewpoint accessible by gondola. The three variants W1761 to W1763 retain the bridge and facades, but change the light, the colored range and the precision of the shapes.
This private version favors lilac grays, cold pinks and muted greens. The walls seem to be crossed by mist; too strong a contrast would cause this particular atmosphere to be lost.
Vertical orientation brings the facades closer together and extends their reflection. The bridge, placed in the lower third, becomes the vanishing point of a space that is both deep and narrow.

The single reference image measures 2563 × 3200 px. It corresponds to W1761 and has been encoded as a true WebP to its native definition, without artificial enlargement.
The left facade, the central light strip and the right tree must keep their proportions. Their balance prevents the composition from tipping towards a simple architectural portrait.
The colors are numerous but not very saturated. Purples circulate from the walls to the water, greens connect the trees to reflections and a few yellows warm the windows.
The reflections descend in irregular lines, interrupted by small horizontals. This alternation creates the quivering of the canal and must remain visible in the reproduction.
Documented benchmarks
These benchmarks concern precisely the private collector's version Wildenstein 1761, sold at Christie's in 2017.
This oil on canvas from 1908 measures 81.3 × 64.9 cm. It is signed and dated "Claude Monet 1908" at the bottom left and appears in the Wildenstein catalog under number 1761.
The painting was presented for sale on November 13, 2017. The Christie's notice documents its history and allows it to be distinguished from the Barberini W1762 and Pola W1763 versions.
Version W1761 appeared in the exhibition dedicated to views of Venice at Bernheim-Jeune. Monet took up his paintings in Giverny before showing the series to the public.
