Look at the work

The Seine enveloped by spring

A dark birch stands on the left bank, while a second inclined tree frames the right. Between them, the pale river leads the eye towards a small, half-hidden construction.

The grasses and foliage are rendered by short touches of green, yellow, blue and white. Darker dots punctuate the branches and give the landscape its quiver.

The Dallas Museum of Art dates F352 from 1887. The painting probably belongs to a triptych of views of Clichy: traces of red border remain on its edges and are found on two landscapes of the same dimensions.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The 1961.99 inventory, the 48.9 × 58.1 cm format and the references F352/JH1321 identify this view of the Seine preserved in Dallas.

A river as a passage

The white and pale blue curve opens the center of the composition. The two banks converge without rigid architectural perspective.

The colors are applied in separate and quick touches. Light is born from the juxtaposition of white, yellow, green and blue.

Original framing

Remains of red paint at the edge of the canvas indicate that Van Gogh had planned a colorful border common to several landscapes.
