À propos de l’œuvre
Route avec un cyprès et une étoile, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · Around May 12 -15, 1890 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France
Road with a cypress and a starReproduction of oil painting on canvas
A black cypress splits the sky between a haloed star and a thin crescent moon. On the white road, two walkers pass a yellow stagecoach; around them, fields, clouds and hills unfold in tight waves.
Look at the work
A monumental cypress divides the night in two
The cypress rises from a triangle of red earth to the upper edge. On the left, a yellow-green star radiates in circles; on the right, the orange crescent appears in a blue sky covered with curved lines. Houses with lit windows line the horizon.
The white road goes up deep then divides around the tree. A yellow stagecoach advances to the right, harnessed to a light horse; two dark figures walk in the foreground. The yellow wheat field on the left responds to the car and the stars.
The cypress connects the earth and the sky, while the road, travelers and stagecoach introduce a story of passage in the Provençal night.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The work KM 108.488 can be recognized by the central cypress, the yellow-green star, the orange crescent, the stagecoach and the two walkers.
A composed landscape
The Kroeller-Müller Museum specifies that this is not a place faithfully reproduced. Van Gogh freely assembles motifs from Provence as a synthesis of his stay.
The cypress as an obelisk
Very straight, very dark and almost without interruption, the tree divides the sky. Its stable silhouette contrasts with the spirals that animate the air and the stars.
Traffic in waves
The curves of the path, hills and clouds respond to each other. Short undulating brushstrokes give the whole scene continuous movement.

Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The painter must maintain the opposition between the vertical cypress and the waves of the sky, as well as the readability of the four small narrative elements on the road.
- The black cypress that crosses the entire height
- The yellow-green star and the orange crescent
- The yellow stagecoach and its horse on the right
- The two walkers and the undulating white road
