Reproduction details

Claude Monet · The tree-lined road between Honfleur and Trouville · National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo

Walk, road to the Saint-Siméon W29 farmhand painted reproduction

A clear road sinks between two walls of dark trees. Their crowns meet almost above the path, but an opening of blue-gray sky and a warm glow on the horizon lead towards the farm buildings. Painted in 1864 near Honfleur, this vertical composition combines the rigor of the Dutch and Barbizon landscapes with a thick material already attentive to bursts of light.

Look at the work

A gap of light transforms the road into a corridor of depth

On the left, a tall, irregular trunk bears a large crown that stands out against the sky. On the right, a tighter row of trees forms an almost continuous mass. Their shadows frame the path without closing it completely.

The road starts from the full width of the foreground then quickly narrows towards the farm visible in the distance. Caps of cream and yellow slide over the ruts, while the edges remain green and brown. The low light from the horizon catches the eye to the exact center of the composition.

The path doesn't just lead to the farm: it connects the compact shade of the trees to a bright opening where the landscape seems to breathe.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

An unusual vertical format for amplifying trees

The height of 81.6 cm allows the trunks and crowns to dominate the viewer. The road, very low in the foreground, thus gains spectacular depth despite the proximity of the foliage.

02

References still visible to the Dutch and Barbizon

The museum brings Monet's brown, green and blue tones closer to 17th-century landscapes and Barbizon painters. The black silhouettes of the trees strongly organize the scene before the impressionist dissolution of the contours.

03

A material that makes the path sparkle

The thick touches of yellow and cream capture the light on the road. The National Museum of Western Art sees a material sensitivity close to Courbet and Diaz, already very personal in young Monet.

Read this specific version

The visual corresponds to Promenade, route de la ferme Saint-Siméon from 1864, preserved in Tokyo under the inventory P.1959-0147 and cataloged Wildenstein 29. The high definition image was converted into a real WebP of 1,684 × 3,000 px.

Composition01

The trees must remain distinct masses

The isolated crown on the left contrasts with the denser curtain on the right. Varied greens, browns and blues reveal their volumes without detailing each leaf.

Color02

The road narrows sharply towards the farm

Edges, shadows and ruts converge together. This rapid perspective is essential for transforming the narrow passage into deep space.

Matter03

Horizon light remains small but intense

A few warm yellows and whites are enough to separate the farm from the sky. Expanding this area would reduce the dramatic contrast with dark trees.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1864, this oil on canvas measures 81.6 × 46.4 cm. It is kept at the National Museum of Western Art under inventory P.1959-0147, with references Wildenstein 29 and Matsukata M772.

Location01

The road linking Honfleur to Trouville

Monet painted the motif near the Saint-Siméon farm during his Norman stay in the summer and autumn of 1864. The buildings appear in the distance, to the left of the bright opening.

Companions02

Boudin, Jongkind and Bazille around Honfleur

The museum places the work in the working sessions carried out with these painters. The Norman landscape then became for Monet a field for studying light, relief and outdoor painting.

Provenance03

A work from the Matsukata collection

Kôjiro Matsukata acquired it from Durand-Ruel around 1922. Placed under sequestration in France in 1944, it was transferred to the Japanese government in 1959 then entered the National Museum of Western Art.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Preserve the strong contrast between the road and the trees.
  • Respect rapid convergence towards the farm.
  • Vary dark greens with blues and browns.
  • Keep the small opening warm in the center of the distance.
