Artwork description
Claude Monet · Belle-Île · 1886 · W1100
In Port-Domois, the coast of Belle-Île opens into a succession of cliffs cut by a dark cove. The viewer dominates the water from a brown and green promontory, while the large light walls stand out under a very high horizon. Signed and dated Claude Monet 86, this oil on canvas measuring 65.5 × 81.5 cm is kept at the Musée d'Orsay under the number RF 2777 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1100.

Look at the work
The foreground forms two dark masses: a rocky outcrop descends from the left and a plant slope closes the right corner. Between them, the sea creates a deep passage that leads to the vertical cliffs at the bottom.
Monet does not reserve a fixed color for each element. The rocks mix yellow, pink, purple and blue; the sea combines turquoise, deep green and white accents; the pinkish gray sky takes on certain colors of the stone.
The feeling of dizziness comes less from the height represented than from the interlocking of the masses: the gaze plunges into the cove before going up along the cliffs.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The sky occupies a narrow strip. This choice gives the entire surface to the coast and reinforces the bird's eye view from the promontory.
Each rocky advance partially masks the next. The differences in value and temperature are sufficient to construct the distance without linear perspective.
The short, diagonal touches follow the swirls of the cove. The dark blues in the center accentuate the depth between the illuminated walls.
Reference image
The single high-definition reference image measures 2,716 × 2,162 px. It is encoded in real WebP at its native definition, without artificial enlargement.
Its almost triangular mass gives the high viewpoint and must remain denser than the cliffs at the bottom.
These complementary colors make the light vibrate. A uniform beige would remove the relief constructed by the touch.
Near turquoise, central blue-green and white fillets should not merge into a single shade.
Documented benchmarks
The Musée d'Orsay documents Les Rochers de Belle-Île, la Côte sauvage, oil on canvas from 1886, 65.5 × 81.5 cm, signed and dated lower right, inventory RF 2777 and catalog Wildenstein 1100.
Monet continued his work on the island to face the rapid changes of weather, the swell and the steep shapes of the coast.
The museum notice specifies that this version is the only one of the five to adopt a horizontal format, particularly suited to the deployment of the cove.
Entering the national collections with the Caillebotte legacy, the work was assigned to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986 and bears the number RF 2777.

Presentation in your interior
This horizontal navy is suitable for a living room, office or room with natural materials. A stone gray, petrol blue or sand wall and a dark frame extend its mineral strength.
