Lion Rock, Belle-Île W1090hand painted reproduction

In the center of a green sea, a rounded rock reminiscent of a lion's head stands in front of a long dark platform. The cliff occupies the entire left side and leads towards this isolated pattern, while the white foam circulates between the reefs under a purple-gray sky. Painted in 1886, this 65.5 × 82 cm oil on canvas is kept at the Des Moines Art Center and corresponds to Wildenstein 1090.

Look at the work

The Lion of Port-Coton detached in the middle of the waves

The dark cliff enters from the left and forms a wide diagonal to the center. Lion Rock stands out just beyond, resting on an almost horizontal base. Smaller reefs run towards the foreground and right edge.

The sky brings together gray, mauve and blue; the sea combines turquoise, deep green and white. The rocks are purple-brown with some red accents, and their contours are constantly broken by foam.

The resemblance to a lion remains secondary: Monet is mainly interested in how this stable silhouette resists currents and changes color under the overcast sky.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

An instantly recognizable pattern

The rounded head and its rocky base isolate the Lion in the center. The side cliff serves as a natural setting without completely closing the horizon.

02

A depth built by reefs

The rocks diminish and change sharpness from the foreground out to sea. The foam surrounding them makes their distances noticeable.

03

A palette of overcast weather

The greens of the water remain bright despite the gray sky. Mauves, blues and dark reds shape the rock without direct solar contrast.

Read this specific version

A single exact image of W1090 is used throughout the sheet and as the sole media for the product. The real WebP measures 1000 × 803 px and retains the native definition available without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep the Lion slightly to the right of center

Its position and rounded silhouette identify W1090. Moving it to the exact middle would stiffen the composition.

Color02

Preserve the dark cliff on the left edge

It must remain heavy and close, opposite the opening of the sea and the sky on the right.

Matter03

Keeping foam whites between reefs

These accents separate the planes and circulate the gaze around the main rock.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Des Moines Art Center documents Lion Rock, rocks at Belle-Île, oil on canvas from 1886 measuring approximately 65.5 × 82 cm and classified Wildenstein 1090.

Pattern01

Lion Rock observed from the coast of Port-Coton

Monet takes up this formation in several versions. W1090 shows the Lion from the front, isolated in front of a rocky platform and framed by the left cliff.

Stay02

A painting of the Belle-Île countryside in 1886

Living on the wild coast for more than two months, Monet seeks to translate the colors of the Atlantic and the difficulty of a windswept landscape.

Collection03

A work preserved in Iowa

The painting belongs to the Des Moines Art Center. The reference W1090 distinguishes it from versions W1091 of the Fitzwilliam Museum and W1092 in private collection.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1090 version
  • The rounded silhouette of Leo
  • The large dark cliff on the left
  • The green sea and the foam between the reefs
