In Port-Coton, a dark cliff advances from the left while Lion Rock rises into the sea. Around the blocks, blue, green and white water fragments into a multitude of currents. Signed and dated Claude Monet 86, this oil on canvas measuring 65.4 × 81.2 cm is kept at the Fitzwilliam Museum under the number PD.27-1998 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1091.

Lion Rock emerges facing the steep mass of the cliff

The cliff occupies the entire left edge and projects its horizontal profile towards the center. The isolated, darker rock stands out in front of the horizon. Between these two masses, the waves open a luminous passage.

The stone combines blue black, purple, brown and some red accents. The sea mixes turquoise, cobalt, green and white in tight touches. The sky, calmer, offers a blue-gray stripe which brings out the turbulence at the bottom.

Lion Rock appears still, but everything around it moves: the foam, reflections and even contours of the stone seem transformed by water.

The rectangular cliff on the left and the rounded silhouette of the Lion create a central interval where the sea becomes the true focus of the composition.

Its wider touch and clear values slow down the gaze before it returns to the dense matter of the waves.

One of thirty-nine paintings painted on Belle-Île

Monet worked for nearly ten weeks on the wild coast in the fall of 1886, multiplying the framing in front of the same rocks under different sea conditions.

First sale02

Purchased in Monet by Boussod, Valadon & Cie

The gallery register indicates an acquisition from the painter in April 1887, a few months after his return from Belle-Île.

Museum03

Awarded to Fitzwilliam in 1998

Already loaned to the museum since 1983, the painting was accepted for payment of inheritance tax and then officially assigned to the Fitzwilliam Museum.
