Reproduction details

Claude Monet · Two vermilion hulls on the Seine · Musée de l'Orangerie

Argenteuil, Les Bateaux rouge W370hand painted reproduction

Two red sailboats at anchor dominate the surface of the Seine. Their hulls and warm reflections oppose the blues of the water and the sky, while the floating grass extends in the foreground a sheet of fragmented greens. Monet makes boats a colorful core around which the masts, banks and small boats organize the entire vibration of the Argenteuil basin.

Look at the work

The vermilion of the hulls gives the pelvis its center of gravity

The two red boats are slightly shifted to the left. The first has its dark bow, the second a wider hull and a light cabin. Alongside them, ultramarine blue boats and a white boat widen the group without reducing the impact of red.

The very fine masts rise almost to the upper edge and cut the sky into irregular intervals. In the foreground, aquatic vegetation mixes greens, ochres and red reflections. Further on, the bank is reduced to a light succession of houses, trees and sails which leaves plenty of room for the atmosphere.

Red is not an isolated accent: it passes through hulls, reflections and green water to set the entire surface in motion.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A compact center crossed by verticals

The hulls form a strong horizontal mass, but each mast extends it towards the sky. This crossing gives the composition its stability while multiplying fine rhythms.

02

Complements that reinforce the light

Vermilion intensifies on contact with blues and greens. Monet, however, avoids pure solid areas: each color receives neighboring touches which integrate it with the reflections and the air of the pool.

03

A deliberately mobile perspective

Boats do not obey a single line of flight. Their slightly divergent orientations and the fractional surface of the water create a flexible depth, adapted to the movement of moored boats.

Composition01

The reds must remain varied

Vermilion, orange, brown and pink make up the hulls and their reflections. A uniform red would remove the volume of boats and the difference between paint, shadow and reflected light.

Color02

The masts are thin but never mechanical

Their verticality structures the sky, yet their hues and thicknesses vary. Some are partially lost in the clouds, others are reflected brokenly in the water.

Matter03

The vegetation floats on the reflections

The green touches in the foreground do not form a solid bank. They alternate with blue, purple and red openings that maintain the feel of an aquatic surface.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1875, this oil on canvas measuring 56 × 67 cm is signed Claude Monet lower left. It is kept at the Musée de l'Orangerie under the inventories RF 1963 106 and MONET HA001, and classified Wildenstein 370.

Argenteuil01

A pool dedicated to water sports

Monet settled in the town in December 1871. The Seine hosted sailing and canoeing there; Around 1875, the artist painted several groups of boats at anchor and studied their changing colors on the water.

Collection02

The unique Monet from the Walter-Guillaume collection

Domenica Walter acquired the painting around 1955. The museum emphasizes that this work from the Argenteuil years echoes, in the Orangerie collection, the vast late cycle of Water Lilies.

Provenance03

From Romaine Brooks to the Orangery

The published provenance mentions Romaine Brooks in Nice around 1921, then Ms. Jean Walter. The work was acquired in 1963 with the assistance of the Society of Friends of the Louvre and materially joined the Orangerie in 1977.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Preserve the contrast of the red shells with the blues and greens.
  • Keep the masts thin, varied and slightly irregular.
  • Fragment reflections without losing the shape of boats.
  • Let the distant shore blend into the atmosphere.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This nautical landscape brings a bright contrast to a living room, dining room or office. A midnight blue, light oak or matte gold frame brings out the vermilion hulls; diffused light retains the green and lilac nuances of the Seine.
