Look at the work

These are not flowers in vases, but a garden that extends beyond the frame

A branch loaded with roses enters from the left, crosses the canvas and extends to the right. The pink, mauve and white flowers do not form an isolated bouquet: they belong to a plant mass which unfolds in front of the sky of Giverny.

The construction remains deliberately difficult to grasp. Branches, petals, leaves and blue passages overlap without a stable horizon. The large format, two meters wide, transforms this vegetation into an environment rather than a simple decorative motif.

At the end of his life, Monet no longer sought to clearly separate the subject and the atmosphere: roses seemed made of the same colored material as the sky.

A living diagonal

The main branch rises from the left then disperses. It gives a general direction without imposing symmetry on the abundance of flowers.

White is never neutral

Light petals contain pinks, blues, yellows and greens. These colors prevent flowers from coming off like cut-out shapes.

Almost erased landmarks

The garden has no visible soil or horizon. This loss of scale brings the canvas closer to the great Water Lilies and abstract painting of the 20th century.

Collection03

Legacy of Michel Monet

Remaining in the workshop collection, the painting entered the Marmottan Monet museum by the bequest of Michel Monet in 1966. It is not signed and bears inventory 5096.
