À propos de l’œuvre

Ravin, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · October 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

The Ravine, F662Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Blue-green rock walls tighten around a narrow water passage; Van Gogh transforms the Peiroulets ravine into a dense and melancholy landscape.

Look at the work

A wild space that closes towards the center

Two masses of rocks occupy the sides of the canvas and converge towards a narrow gorge. At the bottom, a waterfall or trickle descends between the walls; in the foreground, a green pool and light stones open a visual path into the depth.

The volumes are constructed by long curved and oblique touches, in a range of blue, green, gray, purple and ocher. The lines follow the folds of the rock instead of describing them by a classic model, giving the ravine an almost organic movement.

Painted on the motif in the fall of 1889, F662 covers a first composition of wild vegetation made a few months earlier, now revealed by x-ray.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The MFA connects the painting to the ravine near Saint-Paul and to a letter where Van Gogh describes the pleasure of working in these wild places despite the wind.

01

A throat without sky

The horizon almost completely disappears. The rocks close the view and concentrate the light on the central passage.

02

Geology by the touch

Curves, hatching and dark lines follow the strata and hollows, transforming the rock into a moving surface.

03

A melancholic palette

Blues, greens and grays dominate, with few warm accents. This chromatic restraint reinforces the depth and solitude of the place.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Inventory 52.1524 and references F662/JH1804 distinguish the Boston Ravine from the Peiroulets Ravine F661 kept at the Kroeller-Müller Museum.

Location

Near Saint-Paul

Van Gogh sets up his easel between the stones of the neighboring ravine of the Saint-Rémy asylum, in land exposed to the wind.

Beneath the surface

A hidden painting

The x-rays revealed a study of wild vegetation under the Ravine, reused when the artist lacked new canvas.

Reception

Admired by Gauguin

The following spring, Paul Gauguin saw the landscape in Paris and expressed a desire to exchange it for one of his own works.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the confinement of the composition, the cold nuances and the direction of the keys which describe each wall.

  • The narrow gorge in the center
  • The large blue-green walls
  • The small greenish pool in the foreground
  • The purple and black contours of the rocks
  • The curved keys that follow the layers
