À propos de l’œuvre

Racines d'arbres, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · July 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Tree rootsReproduction of oil painting on canvas

On a canvas twice as wide as it is high, roots, cut trunks, earth and foliage intertwine until they erase all horizons. This unfinished work is probably Van Gogh's last painting.

Look at the work

An embankment becomes a network of blue and yellow shapes

On the left, several purple-blue trunks rise out of the frame. Their roots wind through ocher-yellow and orange soil. In the center, a stump with almost animal shapes stands out in front of a mass of light green foliage.

The right is occupied by large blue curves, roots and cut branches. The thick contours connect the colored areas like in stained glass. Certain parts of canvas remain less covered, a sign of interrupted work.

The subject is not a distant forest but the very skin of an embankment: Van Gogh abolishes scale and shifts the landscape towards an almost abstract construction.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The work s0195V1962 can be recognized by its exceptional panoramic format, its blue trunks cut from above and the complete absence of sky.

01

A panorama without horizon

The 100.1 cm wide format evokes a landscape, but the gaze remains glued to the embankment. No distance helps stabilize the depth.

02

Contours as a framework

Dark blue lines surround roots, trunks and masses of foliage. They transform natural elements into interlocking shapes and maintain the cohesion of the canvas.

03

A work left open

Less elaborate passages and abrupt transitions show that Van Gogh did not lead painting to the same degree of completion everywhere. This incompleteness belongs to its historical state.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Van Gogh Museum preserves Tree Roots under number s0195V1962. The oil on canvas measures exactly 50.3 × 100.1 cm and bears the references F816 and JH2113.

Last work

Probably painted on July 27

The museum considers it probably Van Gogh's very last painting. A testimony from Andries Bonger mentions a sunny undergrowth painted the morning before his death.

Location found

An embankment on rue Daubigny

In 2020, the comparison with an old postcard made it possible to highly plausibly identify the Auvers embankment where Van Gogh set up his easel.

Land

Trees in a marl quarry

The museum notice describes trees intended for wood growing in an old marl quarry, a type of land present around Auvers.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The reproduction must respect the panoramic framing, the cobalt blue contours and the deliberately less completed parts, without inventing a sky or completing the embankment.

  • The blue-purple trunks cut by the upper edge
  • The winding roots on the yellow-orange ground
  • The large mass of green foliage in the center
  • The more open passages which testify to incompleteness

A radical panorama for a large wall

The very elongated format is suitable above a sofa, sideboard or headboard. Cobalt blue, bright green and ocher give an intense, particularly strong presence on a light wall.
