Le botteleur, par Vincent van Gogh

The Bootler after Millet, F693Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A kneeling worker hugs a sheaf in the middle of a field almost entirely filled with millstones; Van Gogh converts an engraving after Millet into a muted accord of yellow, green and blue.

Look at the work

A figure gathered in the heart of the harvest

The kicker crouches in the foreground, head down and arms outstretched around a wreath. His light blue shirt and gray green pants cut out a compact silhouette in the yellows of the field.

Two large millstones occupy the background and push the sky towards a very thin strip. The curved and thick touches circulate the gaze between the ears, the sheaves and the movement of the body.

At the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, Van Gogh wanted to continue painting figures despite the absence of regular models. The prints after Millet offer him solid compositions that he freely reinterprets through color.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum notice identifies this painting by the inventory s0173V1962, the references F693/JH1785 and the dimensions of 44.5 × 33.1 cm.

01

An almost erased horizon

The millstones rise to the upper edge and reduce the sky to a narrow blue breath. All attention remains on the material of the field.

02

The body inscribed in a circle

Back, arms and legs form a loop collected around the sheaf. This construction makes the effort readable without multiplying the details.

03

Color replaces modeling

Blue, green and purple separate clothing and shadows, while neighboring yellows describe straw, light and relief.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

This work is part of the group of interpretations based on the printed series of Millet's Works in the Fields studied by Van Gogh in Saint-Rémy.

Model

An engraving rather than a living model

The clinic offered few opportunities to perform figures; Van Gogh relied on a black and white reproduction.

Interpretation

Color as an invention

The general design follows Millet, but the blue-yellow range and key network belong entirely to Van Gogh.

Subject

Bind the sheaves

The worker gathers and squeezes the cut cereals before storage; his low posture concentrates the energy of the scene.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must respect the circular posture of the baler, the difference between the yellows of the sheaves and the greenish blues of the garment, as well as the thick touches of the field.

  • Head bowed under the hat
  • The light blue shirt
  • Arms clenching the sheaf
  • The two large millstones
  • The thin strip of blue sky
