À propos de l’œuvre

Rue du village et escaliers à Auvers avec deux personnages, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · May -June 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Village street and staircase in Auvers with two charactersReproduction of oil painting on canvas

A small street in Auvers divides around an embankment before going up to a house with a red roof. Two tiny figures, an oblique staircase and dazzling walls give a surprising scale to this pocket painting.

Look at the work

Two paths, a staircase and a hanging house

The composition starts from a crossing very close to the lower edge. On the left, the clear path goes around a planted mound; on the right, orange steps climb behind a dark trunk. Two figures stand precisely at the point where the directions separate.

The large white house dominates the top of the painting, almost hidden by yellow and green trees. Its red roof responds to the orange accents of the floor. The blue, white and lilac walls in the foreground close the sides and focus the gaze towards the staircase.

Despite its modest dimensions, the painting multiplies the shots: the gaze enters along the path, hesitates with the two figures, then rises to the luminous facade.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The F796 work can be recognized by its small horizontal format, the bifurcated path, the brown staircase which goes up to the right and the long white facade under a red roof.

01

A deliberately unstable prospect

Path, staircase and embankment do not converge towards a single point. Their competing directions give the village a rugged terrain and keep the eye moving.

02

Two figures as joints

The silhouettes are very small, but their position at the intersection is decisive. They measure the scale of the place and connect the foreground to the rising passage.

03

Colors that build space

The bluish white of the walls, the yellow of the grass and the red of the roof distinguish the plans more surely than a regular architectural drawing.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

This oil on canvas measuring 20.5 × 26 cm, painted in Auvers between May and June 1890, bears the references F796 and JH2110. It is reported in a private collection in Japan.

Catalog

F796 · JH2110

These two numbers allow us to separate this small view from another village street and staircase in Auvers, F795, kept at the Saint Louis Art Museum.

Format

A study of 20.5 × 26 cm

The support is much smaller than Auvers' large canvases. Van Gogh nevertheless condenses several levels of land and a complete architecture.

Location

Private collection in Japan

The catalogs place it in a private Japanese collection. It should not be confused with works belonging to the museums of Hiroshima or Saint Louis.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Reproduction must preserve the rapid changes of direction, the smallness of the figures and the contrasts between pale walls, yellow floor and red roof.

  • The clear bifurcation which opens the foreground
  • The two silhouettes placed at the foot of the stairs
  • The dark trunk that accompanies the climb of the steps
  • The white facade and the red roof at the top
