Under gray weather, the western facade of the cathedral seems to emerge from a mauve blue mist. The portal, the statues and the large tower lose their clear contours, but gain an almost mineral presence. Monet does not take a survey of the monument: he records the way in which the humid air absorbs and then restores each relief.
Look at the work
The vertical framing cuts the upper parts of the monument and brings the portal very close. The large tower occupies the left, while the sculpted facade narrows to the right. The viewer finds himself in front of an architectural mass which extends beyond the field and seems to continue beyond the canvas.
Grays are constructed from blue, purple, pink and ocher. A small orange note, linked to the clock, awakens the center of the composition. The shadows of the arches and niches are not black: they accumulate colored touches which shape the stone by vibration.
W1345 makes gray weather an active color: the mist reduces the details, but amplifies the presence of the cathedral.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Monet works from a room located above the Mauquit boutique, at 81 rue Grand-Pont. This elevated position, very close to the building, explains the cut framing, the strong verticality and the absence of space in front of the gate.
The historical title transmitted with the canvas mentions the Albane Tower. The large volume visible on the left, however, corresponds to the Saint-Romain tower on the western facade. The traditional name is preserved in the full title of the work.
Monet works the reliefs with small superimposed touches. The protruding areas receive warmer grays; the hollows are charged with blue and purple. Reproduction must preserve this modulation without transforming the facade into a linear design.

Only one reference image is used: the complete view published by the Rouen museum, converted into a real WebP of 2,898 × 4,000 px, without artificial enlargement.
The edges cut the tower and the facade, reinforcing the proximity of the monument. The darker portals organize the lower part and give scale to the whole.
The cold palette contains countless temperature variations. The small central orange note is rare and must remain measured to maintain its accent role.
The facade is not smoothed. Impasto and smears respond to each other to make pinnacles, statues and arches appear in the atmosphere. Their irregularity is essential to the effect of light.

The Rouen Museum of Fine Arts keeps this version under inventory 1909.1.32; the Wildenstein catalog identifies it under number 1345.
This oil on canvas measures 102 × 74 cm. Painted during the Rouen countryside and dated 1894, it bears the number Wildenstein 1345.
The painting is kept in the same city where the motif was painted. It belongs to the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts of Rouen under number 1909.1.32.
Monet painted the cathedral during stays in Rouen in 1892 and 1893, then took up the paintings in his studio. In 1895, twenty versions were brought together by Durand-Ruel and revealed the variations of the monument according to time and time.
