The red roofs of Auvers under a white and blue sky

The ocher street begins in the center of the lower edge and advances between the houses. On the left, a white facade and a stone wall draw a broken line. On the right, a gray building closes the foreground while a dark lean-to directs the eye towards the village.

Three large orange-red roofs form the heart of the image. The trees are reduced to black and olive green masses, placed against a clear sky. In it, the blue-purple touches remain separate, like rapid signs rather than a continuous cloud.

The street seems calm, but the diagonals of the roofs, facades and touch make every element of the village vibrate.

The work AI 755 is distinguished by its orange roofs, its central street, its dark tree silhouettes and its white sky covered with blue-purple hatching.

Architecture without a straight line

Facades, walls and roof slopes meet at irregular angles. Van Gogh keeps the village recognizable while giving it a strongly personal rhythm.

The sky left in reserve

A large part of the clear preparation remains visible between the blue touches. This active white lightens the houses and accentuates the frankness of the brushstroke.

Almost graphic trees

The green-black crowns are surrounded and simplified. They serve as vertical punctuation between the large orange shapes of the roofs.

Precisely identify the original work

Rue à Auvers-sur-Oise is kept at the Ateneum under the inventory AI 755. Painted in May 1890, it measures 73.5 × 92.5 cm and bears the references F802 and JH2001.

Acquisition

The first Van Gogh in a museum

The Ateneum purchased the painting in 1903. The Finnish institution thus became the first museum in the world to include a work by Van Gogh in its collections.

By Jo van Gogh-Bonger in Helsinki

After Theo and his widow Jo, the work passed to the critic Julien Leclercq. His widow, the Finnish pianist Fanny Flodin, then sold it to the Antell delegation.
