Look at the work

A Gothic facade that has become a surface of light

The framing cuts the towers and brings the viewer closer to the stone. The large rose, the three portals and the rows of sculptures remain recognizable, but their contours dissolve in a multitude of short touches. The blue-purple shadows give the openings an almost nocturnal depth.

Warm tones are concentrated around the central bay and on the protruding reliefs. The further down you go towards the portals, the darker the palette becomes. Monet thus circulates light from top to bottom without resorting to a rigid architectural design.

In W1356, the cathedral is not a still monument: it is a mineral material that changes with the sun.

Monet worked opposite the portal in 1893 then resumed his paintings at length in his studio. The date 1894 retained by the museum corresponds to this completion before the exhibition of the series at Durand-Ruel in 1895.
