À propos de l’œuvre

Meules de foin en Provence, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · June 12-13, 1888 · Arles

Wheat wheels in Provence, F425Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Two golden millstones occupy almost the entire canvas. A red ladder leans between them, while a worker, yellow houses and a few roofs appear at the back: the Arles countryside becomes a monumental construction of straw and light.

Look at the work

The millstones advance to the foreground like two architectures

The largest mass, on the left, exceeds the line of the houses and cuts the landscape widely. The second, narrower and set back, allows depth to be measured; the oblique scale visually connects these two volumes.

At the foot of the millstones, the stubble is painted with small green and yellow verticals. In the sky, the pale blue and white touches change direction, as if the wind were also passing through the material of the painting.

Painted in Arles around June 12-13, 1888, the Wheat Stacks in Provence form an oil on canvas measuring 73.5 × 93 cm. Work F425/JH1442 is kept at the Kroeller-Müller Museum under number KM 108.785.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The museum recalls that Van Gogh painted this canvas on the motif, in full sun and in a single session. The subject is then unusual: instead of placing the millstones in the distance, he enlarges them until he makes them the protagonists of the landscape.

01

The big millstone almost becomes a character

Its irregular summit, its sides shaped by long touches and its central shadow give it an autonomous volume in front of the houses.

02

The red scale measures height

Its sharp diagonal introduces a manufactured object into the organic mass of wheat and reveals the spectacular scale of the two piles.

03

Yellows and blues organize all the light

The millstones and the ground concentrate the warm tones; houses, sky and some shadows respond in blue, white and cool green.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The title of the Kroeller-Müller Museum designates wheat stacks, that is to say wheat stacks rather than simple haystacks. References F425/JH1442 and KM 108.785 identify this painting from the harvest campaign of June 1888.

Campaign

Ten paintings around the first harvest

At the beginning of June 1888, Van Gogh worked in the fields of Arles until the rains of June 20. The museum lists at least five drawings and ten paintings from this campaign.

Work

A canvas painted in a single session

Van Gogh sets up his easel outside, under full sun. Satisfied with his concentration, he writes to Theo that he is happy "like a cricket".

Pattern

Wheat as an image of the human condition

In his letters, the painter brings the growth and harvest of wheat closer to the stages of human life, which gives the landscape a broader scope than simple harvest.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the monumental proportions of the two millstones, the red ladder, the small worker, the yellow houses, the curved touches of the straw and the blue-white movement of the sky.

  • The large millstone in the foreground
  • The oblique red scale
  • The second millstone set back
  • The little worker in front of the houses
  • The blue and white touches of the sky
