Look at the work

Dignity of earthman

The tight framing places the gnarled hands in the lower center and the face in the shadow of the hat. The frontal pose is stable, almost monumental.

Van Gogh uses color expressively: yellow and orange surround the face, while blue and turquoise run through the jacket, eyes and beard.

Painted in Arles in August 1888, this oil portrait on canvas measures 64.1 × 54.6 cm. It is F443/JH1548 and is numbered M.1975.06.P at the Norton Simon Museum.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The portrait does not seek to soften age or work. Wrinkles, gray beard, firm hands and direct gaze give Staircase a presence that intense color amplifies.
