From a high point of the Colonnade du Louvre, Monet looks at the facade of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois and the bustle of the square. The Gothic rose, roofs and chimneys stand out under a blue sky, while the trees lined up hide the bottom of the church. In the foreground, pedestrians, omnibuses and cars form a circulation of dark touches: Paris becomes both precise architecture and a changing spectacle.
Look at the work
The central bell tower, the gable and the large rose make up the architectural core. Monet describes the volumes by blue grays, ochres and whites rather than a uniform linear design. On the right, a row of Haussmannian facades extends the space and leads towards the edge.
A frieze of green trees crosses the middle of the canvas and hides the portals. Under their foliage, silhouettes, horses and cars concentrate in a dark band. The light ground in the foreground receives bluish shadows and lets the small figures circulate in several directions.
The city is observed like a landscape: stones, leaves, vehicles and the sky change color depending on their distance and exposure to light.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The height of the Louvre Colonnade allows you to simultaneously see the square, the treetops and the roofs. The foreground remains largely clear, then the density increases up to the facade of the church.
Pink, gables, buttresses and roofs are recognizable, but their contours vibrate. Monet combines precise construction with freer passages so that light remains active on the stone.
Passers-by and vehicles do not report any particular episode. Their vertical and horizontal spots give the measure of the place and reflect the daily activity of a Paris in transformation.

Blues, pinks, grays and ochres shape the facade. A restitution only white or gray would eliminate the sun effect and the differences in depth between porch, nave and gable.
The foliage is dense but composed of touches of yellow, green and almost black. Openings allow buildings to be seen and prevent them from forming an opaque screen.
Their small scale confirms the high viewpoint and monumentality of the church. A few black, blue and ocher accents are enough to make traffic readable.
Documented benchmarks
Painted in 1867, this oil on canvas measuring 79 × 98 cm is kept at the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin under the inventory AI 984. It bears the number Wildenstein 84.
Monet gains access to a high location in the eastern wing of the Louvre. He looks towards the Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois church, a former royal parish located on the other side of the square.
From this post, Monet also painted Le Jardin de l'Infante and the Quai du Louvre. These paintings show his early interest in urban life, before the boulevards and train stations of the 1870s.
Preserved under the AI 984 inventory, the painting belongs to the impressionist core of the Alte Nationalgalerie. Its attribution, dimensions and place of creation are documented by the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
