A snowy road curves up between the trees of the Côte de Grace. Two figures advance side by side in the foreground, while the buildings of the Saint-Siméon farm appear at the bend of the path. Monet combines the pink whites of the snow, the greens still visible from the embankments and the purple grays of the sky to capture a humid winter landscape, very far from a uniform white.
Look at the work
The wheel and footprints open several gray lines in the snow. The wooden railing follows the climb on both sides, then tightens around the walkers dressed in blue and dark tones. Their small scale accentuates the height of the trees and the depth of the path.
On the left, dense foliage retains deep greens under the snow; on the right, the bare trunks form a more vertical and transparent screen. Between these two areas, the road, the buildings and the pale sky come together in a clear mist which softens the distance.
Snow becomes a revealer of light: it unites the path, the sky and the branches while allowing an astonishing variety of colors to breathe.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The curve of the path constitutes the main axis of the composition. The wooden barriers highlight the edges, but their irregular intervals avoid any rigidity and advance the gaze to the buildings of Saint-Siméon.
The left grove is compact, low and dark; the right curtain of trees is high, openwork and punctuated by the trunks. This asymmetry frames the central passage without closing the landscape.
Sotheby's places the work among four landscapes painted after a heavy snowfall in early 1867. Monet works directly outside and is already exploring the colorful reflections that winter makes particularly visible.
Reference image
The visual corresponds to La Route de la ferme Saint-Siméon in winter, listed Wildenstein 81. The source of 2,200 × 1,517 px was preserved in its native definition then encoded in real WebP, without artificial enlargement.
Roses, beiges, blues and grays appear according to the traces and shadows. Reserves of earth and grass must remain visible to preserve the relief of the path.
Their branches become thinner and less contrasting near the farm. Strengthening them evenly would reduce the atmospheric depth that distinguishes the center of the stage.
Their silhouette remains simple, but their blue and gray clothes detach them from the path. Their precise position gives the scale of the road and the direction of travel.
Documented benchmarks
Painted in 1867, this oil on canvas measures 49 × 65 cm. It belongs to a private collection and bears the number Wildenstein 81.
The path linked Honfleur to Trouville via Mother Toutain's inn. Boudin, Jongkind, Bazille and Monet worked there willingly, making this site an essential center of Norman open-air painting.
Monet already knew this motif when heavy snow covered the region in 1867. This version is distinguished by its horizontal format, the curved climb, the two walkers and the farm placed in the center of the distance.
The work notably belonged to the baritone and collector Jean-Baptiste Faure, then to Georges Clemenceau. It has been presented in numerous exhibitions devoted to Monet and the beginnings of impressionism.
