Reproduction details

Claude Monet · The couriers of Saint-Lazare in 1877 · Private collection

Saint-Lazare Station, exterior view W446hand painted reproduction

The tracks bend towards the center between a dark locomotive on the left and the large courier buildings on the right. Steam invades the middle, joins the purple sky and transforms the buildings on Rue de Rome into floating silhouettes. Monet paints the station from its service areas, at the heart of his activity.

Look at the work

The serpentine path leads under a steam screen

A double line of rails enters from below and curves towards a central train. On the left, a black mass closes the platform; street lamps, railway workers and passengers give the scale of the space.

The messaging halls go up to the right with their dark roofs and glass lamps. Further on, the Pont de l'Europe crosses the stage while the Parisian facades dissolve into the plumes.

The center seems empty, yet paths, smoke, signals and passers-by converge there like the elements of a spectacle in transformation.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A curve instead of an axial perspective

The rails prevent a rectilinear leak and lead the eye around the trains towards the heart of the station.

02

A massive building cut by the edge

The messengers occupy the right like a dark wall, opposite the open and vaporous sky.

03

An identical touch for the city and the smoke

Small blue and mauve gestures connect sky, facades and steam, abolishing fixed contours.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The unique reference is the Christie's sales file documenting the Wildenstein 446 version. The image of 3200 × 2408 px was reduced to 3000 × 2258 px, without enlargement, and then converted to WebP.

Composition01

Courier lamps

Their light shapes emerge on the dark facade and distinguish this version from other views of Saint-Lazare.

Color02

Purples above ochres

The sky and the fumes use a cold range; wet ballast and rails provide pinkish earth.

Matter03

Figures as punctuation

A few vertical silhouettes structure the platforms without competing with trains and architecture.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in Paris in 1877, this 60.4 × 80.2 cm oil on canvas is the Wildenstein 446 version of the Saint-Lazare countryside.

Series01

Twelve views taken in three months

Between January and March 1877, Monet constantly changed position in and around the station to study steam, light and architecture.

Viewpoint02

On the edge of the ancient eastern routes

The painter places himself under the vast arches of the messengers, whose lamps appear at the right edge.

Exposure03

A work linked to the third impressionist exhibition

The series dominated Monet's sending in the spring of 1877 and affirmed the station as a major subject of modern life.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Preserve the exact curve of the rails.
  • Keep the lamps clear on the right facade.
  • Differentiate between locomotive, steam and distant buildings.
  • Maintain mauve blues without neutralizing ochres in the soil.
