A red signal dominates the center while locomotives, wagons and railway workers fragment into dark touches. Monet chooses here the surroundings of the station, where traffic organizes the entire landscape.

Curved rails lead to a signal suspended in the steam

The tracks enter from below and depict several arcs towards the center. On the left, a tall green building, a locomotive and a few silhouettes form a first screen. On the right, purple hangars line up behind a train almost engulfed in smoke.

The signal disk, with its red accent, serves as a vertical pivot. The white plumes pass in front of the roofs and join a pink, blue and cream sky. The damp ground responds to this light with ochres, mauves and fine shines on the steel.

The track is not just a setting: its curves distribute trains, buildings and steam throughout the field.

The purple roofs remain readable by their silhouette while their walls disappear under white and blue passages.

Monet obtained authorization to work in the station and its surroundings at the beginning of 1877. He multiplied the angles in order to study the same universe under different structures.

At the exit rather than under the glass roof

This version favors track beams, signals and technical buildings. The main architecture of the station remains off-camera.

The painting bears the inscription Cl.M. 77, an element documented with inventory 016-0036 of the Hakone Museum.
