Steam invades the middle, joins the purple sky and transforms the buildings on Rue de Rome into floating silhouettes. Monet paints the station from its service areas, at the heart of his activity.

The serpentine path leads under a steam screen

A double line of rails enters from below and curves towards a central train. On the left, a black mass closes the platform; street lamps, railway workers and passengers give the scale of the space.

The messaging halls go up to the right with their dark roofs and glass lamps. Further on, the Pont de l'Europe crosses the stage while the Parisian facades dissolve into the plumes.

The center seems empty, yet paths, smoke, signals and passers-by converge there like the elements of a spectacle in transformation.

The unique reference is the Christie's sales file documenting the Wildenstein 446 version. The image of 3200 × 2408 px was reduced to 3000 × 2258 px, without enlargement, and then converted to WebP.
