Claude Monet · Massifs of roses in front of a house in Sainte-Adresse · Fabre Museum

Garden in bloom, in Sainte-Adresse W69hand painted reproduction

Rows of red, white and pink roses rise in front of a house partially hidden by trees. A very narrow cypress almost joins the blue sky, while large dark foliage closes the left. Monet superimposes flowerbeds, shrubs and architecture to give this small garden an abundant depth, built by color.

Look at the work

Flower bands lead from the foreground to the house and to the sky

The bottom of the canvas begins with a very simple lawn, then an alley and several rows of rose bushes carried by fine stakes. Bright reds punctuate the greens, accompanied by white and pink flowers which multiply even in front of the house.

On the left, a dense tree forms an almost black mass. In the center, the light walls, shutters and fireplace appear between the branches; the vertical cypress exceeds them. On the right, yellow-green foliage juts out against the blue of the sky and reopens the composition.

Before the Giverny garden, Monet already looks at flowers as an architecture of color capable of organizing the entire landscape.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A perspective created by the horticultural rows

The stakes and bands of roses diminish as they rise into the canvas. Their regular rhythm guides the eye towards the house, while the differences in height prevent any rigidity.

02

A balance between dark masses and open skies

The left tree brings considerable weight, offset by the large blue space at the top right. The central cypress acts as a vertical hinge between these two areas.

03

A work prior to the famous Giverny garden

Painted around 1866 in Sainte-Adresse, the canvas shows that Monet's interest in flowerbeds and flowering preceded his installation in Giverny by several decades. The garden is already observed as an autonomous pictorial motif.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The visual corresponds to Jardin en fleurs, in Sainte-Adresse, MNR 216 from the Musée d'Orsay, deposited at the Fabre Museum, and Wildenstein number 69. The image of 1,781 × 2,200 px has been preserved in its native definition then encoded in real WebP.

Composition01

Flowers remain touches, not detailed botanical motifs

Reds, pinks, whites and yellows are posed in small grouped accents. Their size and density change with distance to suggest massifs.

Color02

The left foliage contains colorful reflections

Beneath its very dark appearance, we can see olive greens, browns and a few light touches. Preserving them avoids a black block without depth.

Matter03

The blue sky is animated by the edges of the foliage

The leaves of the cypress and the straight tree cut out irregular silhouettes. Their relative sharpness gives the sky its luminosity and extent.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted around 1866, this oil on canvas measures 64.8 × 53.8 cm. It bears the number MNR 216, belongs to the Musée d'Orsay and is deposited at the Fabre Museum; the Wildenstein catalog classifies it under number 69.

Location01

Sainte-Adresse, on the Normandy coast

Monet regularly stays in this neighboring town of Le Havre where his family lives. Gardens, cliffs, beaches and maritime views fueled his outdoor research there in the mid-1860s.

Status02

An MNR work entrusted to national museums

Found in Germany after the Second World War, the painting was entrusted to the custody of national museums in 1950. Assigned to the Musée d'Orsay, it has been deposited at the Fabre Museum since 2006.

Identification03

MNR 216 and Wildenstein 69

The notice from the Musée d'Orsay gives the date around 1866, the signature at the bottom left and the dimensions of 64.8 × 53.8 cm. These landmarks distinguish this vertical view from other gardens painted at Sainte-Adresse.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Maintain the rhythm of the stakes and flower strips.
  • Keeping the left tree very dark but nuanced.
  • Respect the narrow verticality of the cypress.
  • Preserve the reds bright without dispersing them evenly.
