The willow fills almost the entire canvas with long green, red, blue and purple branches. No stable trunk or horizon immediately orders the scene: the tree descends like a curtain of color to a narrow strip of yellow and orange water. This late painting combines a very free material with an insistent vertical structure.

Look at the work

The branches of the willow become a curtain of colorful gestures in front of the water

In the upper half, large turquoise green curves wrap around acidic yellows, reds and blacks. Some touches follow the branches, others cut their direction and thicken the mass of foliage. The rare whites left on the edges maintain breathing around the tree.

Further down, the gestures become mainly vertical. Cobalt blue, purple and red columns descend towards a horizontal orange and yellow band which signals the water. On the left, a lighter mass advances like a second plane of foliage; the Claude Monet stamp appears near the lower corner.

The willow remains identifiable, but the color frees itself from the drawing to the point of hesitating between branches, reflections and painting gestures.

Curves that become branches

Large green curls are not decorative: their direction builds the weight of the branches. They must remain thick, irregular and sometimes interrupted by yellow or red accents.

A descent of cold and warm colors

Blue, purple, red and green follow one another in the long central touches. Mixing them into a uniform dark hue would make the vertical rhythm of the painting disappear.

A very narrow but decisive strip of water

The orange, yellow and purple lines at the bottom suddenly bring a horizontal back into the composition. This small area prevents the mass of the willow from floating without anchoring.

Identification01

Orsay RF 2000 21, Wildenstein 1942

The Musée d'Orsay dates the work between 1920 and 1922. This oil on canvas measures 110 × 100 cm, or 115.5 × 105.5 cm with its frame, and bears the Claude Monet stamp at the bottom left.

Acquisition02

The Philippe Meyer donation entered definitively in 2007

Accepted by the State in 2000 subject to usufruct, the work was attributed to the Musée d'Orsay and included in the Louvre's inventory of paintings. Philippe Meyer renounced usufruct in 2007, allowing its effective entry into the museum.

Exhibition course03

From the last Monets to dialogue with abstraction

The painting was shown at the Museum of Modern Art and the Los Angeles County Museum in 1960. It then appeared in numerous exhibitions devoted to Giverny and Water Lilies, then in Monet and Abstraction in 2010 and Monet/Rothko in 2022.
