Artwork description
Vincent van Gogh · June 17-28, 1888 · Arles
A sower strides across blue-purple earth, his hand open in the gesture of dispersing the seeds. Behind him, a monumental yellow sun sets on a strip of ripe wheat and transforms the landscape into an almost cosmic image.
Look at the work
The horizon line is very high: almost two thirds of the canvas belongs to the plowed ground. The silhouette advances to the right, but its outstretched arm moves back to the left and balances this march with a large opposite movement.
The sun, almost tangent to the wheat line, radiates in touches of yellow and orange in the sky. Its reflection descends in a clear trail through the blue-purple furrows, creating a vertical axis in the middle of the composition.
The Sower at Sunset was painted in Arles around June 17-28, 1888. This oil on canvas of 64.2 × 80.3 cm, F422/JH1470, is kept at the Kroeller-Müller Museum under number KM 106.399.
Composition, touch and color
The museum explains that Van Gogh takes the famous Sower by Jean-François Millet to create a modern, luminous and strongly colored version. The thick painting of the field contrasts blue-violet and orange almost like a relief.
The clods are indicated by thick, short and juxtaposed touches. Their material gives a density in the foreground that the more regular sky lightens.
Its almost perfect shape contrasts with the irregularity of the earth. The painted rays extend its light to the edges of the painting.
The character spreads seeds on the freshly worked soil, while a strip of ripe wheat already stands behind him: two stages of the natural cycle appear together.
Documented benchmarks
F422/JH1470 is the large version of The Sower dominated by the setting sun, kept in Otterlo. KM number 106.399 distinguishes it from the numerous studies and reprints of the same motif carried out by Van Gogh.
Van Gogh admires the Sower painted by Millet in 1850. In Arles, however, he sought a personal translation, based on radiant colors and sharp contrasts.
For Van Gogh, the sower also carries a spiritual dimension: the one who spreads the seeds can evoke the one who transmits the word, while the harvest announces the completion of the cycle.
The painting belongs to the important Van Gogh collection assembled by Helene Kroeller-Müller and today bears the number KM 106.399.
