An iron bridge crosses the snow in front of the red and white houses of Sandvika. The village, trees and blue hill are brought together in a dense composition, but the snow opens luminous intervals between them. Monet transforms this Norwegian pattern into a network of diagonals, verticals and colored spots.
Look at the work
The dark line of the bridge cuts the lower half and leads the gaze towards the buildings. The red houses become warm accents in the middle of the white. Behind them, the trunks rise in front of the blue slope and prevent the planes from separating into too regular strips.
Snow is never left white. It contains blue, pink, pale yellow and cold green. The walls and roofs take on the same hues in a more concentrated form. This colored continuity gives the village a unity that drawing alone could not produce.
The bridge provides the backbone of the composition, but it is the colorful shadows of the snow that really connect every element of the village.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The Art Institute indicates that Monet produced twenty-nine views during his Norwegian campaign of 1895. He painted at least six versions of Sandvika, a village located near Christiania, today Oslo, slightly changing the framing and the effect of snow.
The museum brings the Sandvika iron bridge closer to the Japanese bridge installed in Monet's garden in Giverny. Here, the structure is not exotic: its dark curve serves as a visual passage between the snowy foreground and the houses.
The Chicago technical study describes dense impasto in snow and passages performed both wet on wet and wet on dry. The pigments identified include lead white, vermilion, emerald green, viridian, cobalt and ultramarine.

The bridge fixes the level of the village, then the vertical trunks contradict it. Snow slopes and roofs introduce diagonals that keep the gaze moving.
Reds focus attention in the center, while blues and greens build cold air. Snow takes on these colors at low intensity and avoids any artificial contrast between soil and buildings.
The thick material retains brush marks and gives weight to the foreground. In trees and sky, the touch becomes lighter, creating depth without resorting to a smooth pattern.

The oil on canvas dates from 1895 and measures 73.4 × 92.5 cm. It bears the inscription "Claude Monet 95" painted blue-green at the bottom left.
Monet donated the painting to the sale organized in 1899 for the benefit of Sisley's children. Durand-Ruel bought it, then she joined the Borland family before being offered to the Art Institute from 1961.
The museum preserves the painting under number 1961.790 and presents it in its European painting rooms. The instructions and the scientific catalog precisely document its technique and its provenance.
