Weeping willow and water lily pond, Marmottan W1848hand painted reproduction

A monumental trunk rises from the lower left edge, crossed by red, orange, purple and blue. To its right, a dark mass of branches and reflections descends on lavender blue water. The pool no longer appears as a horizontal space: it mixes with willow and foliage in a vertical composition two meters high, which remains without signature.

Look at the work

A purple and red trunk transforms the edge of the pool into a living column

The trunk is off-center to the left and slightly curved. Its black base tightens before spreading upwards, where the keys become lighter. Monet never locks him in a brown silhouette: reds, pinks and oranges emerge between blues and greens, making you feel the bark, the light and the brushwork at the same time.

On the right, the willow extends into a large black-green mass which falls almost to the center. Lavender blue openings appear between the branches, then yellow greens and turquoise occupy the bottom. The limit between the bank, the plants and the water remains deliberately unstable. Only the vertical presence of the trunk gives a firm reference to this moving surface.

The trunk is the last earthly anchor; around it, the water, the foliage and their reflections become the same colored material.

The reds and oranges advance, while the blues and purples hollow out the shaded parts. This ratio gives volume without continuous contour.

A shadow of willow that remains transparent

The large mass on the right contains lavender blue and green breakthroughs. Preserving them prevents the shade from becoming opaque and maintains the link with the pool.

A canvas bottom without separation between earth and water

Turquoise, moss green, yellow and dark blue overlap near the base. Reproduction must retain this indecision rather than drawing an invented bank.

The Marmottan Monet Museum keeps this oil on canvas from 1916 -1919 under number 5125. It measures 200 × 180 cm without frame and corresponds to number 1848 of the Wildenstein catalog raisonné.

An unsigned monumental canvas

The museum notice states that the work is unsigned. Its frame brings the dimensions to 221.5 × 202.5 cm, which gives the composition a presence close to that of large late decorations.

The legacy of Michel Monet in 1966

Remaining in the family collection, the painting entered the Marmottan Monet Museum thanks to the legacy of Michel Monet in 1966. Today it belongs to the remarkable collection of Water Lilies and views of the garden preserved by the museum.
