Vincent van Gogh · November 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands

The Willow, F195Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

An isolated tadpole willow stands in front of a very low horizon. Its white trunk, its large black sizes and the long shoots that rise out of the frame transform the tree into a monumental portrait.

Look at the work

A single tree occupies almost the entire vertical format

The trunk starts from the lower edge and divides halfway up into several thick branches. The old cuts form dark knots from which green, yellow and red-brown branches spring.

Behind him, the countryside is reduced to three bands: grass in the foreground, hedge or dark field, then creamy blue sky. This simplicity gives room to the irregular silhouette of the willow.

The Willow F195/JH961 is a 42 × 30 cm oil on canvas painted in Nuenen in November 1885. It belongs to the Van Lanschot Kempen art collection and was registered on loan under number 99.459.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh treats the tree like a standing figure. The bottom remains thin and calm, while the trunk is constructed by layers of white, green, brown and black that make every wound and regrowth visible.

01

The trunk is an assembly of colors

White gray, moss green, yellow and black come together in vertical bands. These variations give the wood a rough material without resorting to a smooth pattern.

02

The sizes form powerful knots

Each cutting point appears as a black mass around which the branches divide. Their repetition punctuates the rise of the gaze in the tree.

03

The sky opens the silhouette

Pale blue and cream pass between the branches. These clear intervals prevent the crown from becoming compact and emphasize the height of the format.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Catalogs F195/JH961 identify this willow from November 1885; its recent history also includes theft followed by recovery.

Subject

A willow leads like a tadpole

Regular trunk pruning causes suckers at the same level and creates this characteristic gnarled head. Van Gogh makes it a recurring motif in the Brabant countryside.

Collection

The art of Van Lanschot Kempen

The painting belongs to the Van Lanschot Kempen corporate collection, based at 's-Hertogenbosch. A loan is reported under number 99.459.

History

Stolen in 1999, found in 2006

The work disappeared from the bank's offices in May 1999. It was recovered in March 2006 and returned to its owner after almost seven years.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the vertical format, the black knots of the old sizes, the light bands of the trunk, the branches that come out of the frame and the very low horizon behind the tree.

  • The large white-gray trunk slightly off-center
  • Black masses at waist points
  • The long green and yellow shoots
  • Cream blue sky intervals
  • The three horizontal bands of the landscape
