Look at the work

Willows cut the sky into a series of irregular silhouettes

The trees form a frieze in the middle of the canvas, with trunks visible in places and crowns that vary in height. The meadow rises slightly in the foreground; the sky retains a large place above the horizon.

Yellow and orange surround the trees, then cool towards pink and mauve. The foliage mixes dark green, blue and brown, while the meadow takes on red touches that respond to the sunset.

In W1242, light does not come from a solar disk: it accumulates around trees and transforms their contours into vibration.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A living skyline

The succession of peaks replaces a regular line. Each willow has a different silhouette, which gives rhythm to the horizontal format.

02

Backlighting without absolute black

The tree masses remain crossed by green, blue and purple. They remain colored even when they stand out in front of the bright sky.

03

A transition after the Creuse campaign

Painted in 1889 in Giverny, the canvas retains the chromatic intensity of recent landscapes while returning to the meadows and trees near Monet's house.

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W1242 is used. The real WebP measures 1024 × 813 px and maintains the best reliable public resolution, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Preserve the differences between the willows

Heights, spacings and contours should not be regularized. Their irregularity forms the main design of the work.

Color02

Keep the sky in warm and cold layers

Yellow, orange, pink and purple should remain noticeable. A single uniform shade would suppress the progression of the sunset.

Matter03

Maintain colorful foliage

Blue, green and brown build trees in the shadows. A covering black would make the silhouettes heavy and depthless.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Sotheby's notice documents Willows at sunset, oil on canvas from 1889, 73.5 × 92.6 cm, signed and dated lower right and listed Wildenstein 1242.

Location01

A landscape of Giverny

After his stay in the Creuse, Monet returned to the meadows and trees of Giverny, motifs that he observed daily before his future series of poplars.

Version02

The Wildenstein 1242 canvas

The row of willows, the yellow and pink sky and the red meadow distinguish this work from the Willows of Giverny W1241.

Market03

Presented in New York in 2021

The work is documented as lot 36 of the Modern Evening Auction of Sotheby's, with its signature, date and precise dimensions.
