Look at the work

The moored hulls retain the evening light on the Seine

The nearest sailboat is placed on the left, slightly at an angle, with a red-brown hull. Two other boats run to the right and towards the bottom. The masts rise almost to the upper edge and create a vertical rhythm in front of the open sky.

The opposite bank is reduced to a strip of blue-green trees and buildings. The water occupies the lower half and mixes blue, mauve, green and orange in horizontal touches. The reflections of the masts are interrupted by small wrinkles, which enliven the surface without breaking its general calm.

Boats do not sail: their immobility allows Monet to measure the transformations of the sky and reflections around stable shapes.

Three clearly measured distances

The difference in scale between the hulls organizes the depth. The nearby boat remains partially cropped, the second dominates the center and the third approaches the shore.

The masts structure the sky

Their thin lines cross the clouds and visually connect the hulls to the upper part. Slight inclinations and different heights avoid mechanical repetition.

Light without a direct source

No sun is visible. The roses and yellows of the sky are nevertheless found in the water and on the hulls, giving the whole the diffuse heat of the end of the day.

The shells each have a different temperature

Red brown, dark blue and gray green allow them to be separated. Darkening them all in the same way would reduce the layering of the pool.

The folded sails remain small

Their whites and creams appear near the masts without forming large triangles. Maintaining their folded state distinguishes this view from a regatta scene.

Matter03

Vertical reflections are broken by water

They start under the hulls then fragment into dashes. A continuous line under each mast would give a still and artificial mirror.

This wide portion of the Seine becomes a center of recreational sailing. Monet can observe the boats moored, the regattas and the still vegetal banks facing his place of residence.

The sails are folded and the hulls attached. This stillness provides stable shapes, while the water and the sky carry the most noticeable changes of the scene.

The gift of Bruno and Sadie Adriani in 1962

The work entered the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco through a donation from Bruno and Sadie Adriani. It bears the 1962.23 inventory and is associated with the collections of the Legion of Honor.
