The Seine seen from the heights of Chantemesle W671hand painted reproduction

From the heights of Chantemesle, the Seine becomes a long clear gap between two slopes. A luminous rock closes the foreground, the hills overlap and the river leads the eye towards the valley. This oil on canvas mounted on wood from 1881 measures 14.4 × 22.5 cm; Property of the Musée d'Orsay, it is deposited at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen and corresponds to Wildenstein 671.

Look at the work

An entire valley looked at from the edge of the hillside

The nearby slope forms a dark diagonal from the left. A clear rocky outcrop advances in the center, above the ribbon of the Seine. The banks, hills and sky fit together in narrow bands into the distance.

The blue-gray of the river dialogues with the purples of the rock and the greens of the slope. The distant planes become lighter and less contrasting. This atmospheric gradation amplifies a landscape that is nevertheless painted on a tiny surface.

The view dominates the river, but the composition does not become panoramic: the slope and the rock maintain a physical presence at the edge of the valley.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A very marked descending diagonal

The slope coming from the upper left corner leads the eye towards the Seine and opposes a dense foreground to the opening of the center.

02

The light rock as a visual threshold

Its white, gray and purple mass separates the observer from the river. It gives concrete depth to the high point of view.

03

A perspective made of values

The successive hills gradually lose their contrasts. Monet thus constructs the distance without regular contours.

Read this specific version

The best public image available was preserved at its native definition of 800 × 546 px then encoded as a real WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep the large dark slope on the left

It must remain distinct from the distance and retain its role as a natural setting.

Color02

Preserve central rock outcrop

Its clear values are essential to separate the foreground from the valley.

Matter03

Keep the Seine as a luminous ribbon

The river must lead the gaze towards the bottom without becoming a uniform blue surface.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Musée d'Orsay documents The Seine seen from the heights of Chantemesle, oil on canvas mounted on wood from 1881, 14.4 × 22.5 cm, inventory RF 1948 22 and Wildenstein 671.

Support01

A canvas mounted on wood

The support combines a thin painted canvas with a rigid panel, a solution adapted to the conservation of this very small study.

Provenance02

A work preserved by Blanche Hoschedé-Monet

The painting remained in Giverny until the legacy of 1948, before being attributed to the national collections.

Deposit03

Present at the Rouen Museum of Fine Arts

Deposited in Rouen in 1952, the pochade remains under the responsibility of the Musée d'Orsay and bears the inventory RF 1948 22.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 671 version
  • The look from Chantemesle
  • The light rock in the foreground
  • The Seine valley in depth
