A meadow of tall grass and wildflowers descends towards the Seine, whose blue water widens then turns to the right. On the other bank, poplars and clumps of trees form a low horizon under a blue gray sky, brighter on the right. Signed and dated 1880, this oil on canvas measuring 73.4 × 100.5 cm is kept at the National Gallery of Art under the number 1963.10.177 and corresponds to Wildenstein 597.
Look at the work
Grasses occupy almost the lower half and leave no soil bare. Green vertical lines are punctuated with white and lemon yellow touches; their density decreases near the water, where gestures become horizontal and blue. The change of direction is enough to separate meadow and river.
The Seine curves slightly and leads towards a clear opening on the right. The narrow poplars and rounded trees on the opposite bank alternate like landmarks. Above, the blue and cream clouds resume the broken rhythm of the water without imposing a dramatic effect.
The foreground is not a frame added to the river: its profusion of grass prepares the passage towards the water and makes one feel the very low position of the painter on the bank.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
In Vétheuil, Monet often painted the village, the church or the boats. Here, no construction controls the scene: the spontaneous vegetation, the course of the Seine and the trees on the other bank are enough to define the place.
The grasses are rising, tight and sometimes curly; the water is made of horizontal blue, gray and white dashes. Their meeting remains flexible, without a continuous bank line.
The sky and the river become paler on the same side. This correspondence catches the eye in the curve of the Seine and gives direction to the landscape despite the absence of path or character.

The single image comes from the open digitization of the National Gallery of Art. The source file of 4000 × 2915 px is limited to 3000 × 2186 px then encoded as a real WebP.
They should partially hide the water's edge and remain denser on the left. Shortening them would make you lose the feeling of being placed in the middle of the meadow.
Their keys form neither bouquets nor rows. They give irregular luminous accents and distinguish several depths in the green foreground.
Arctic, cobalt, denim and gray alternate according to the current and the sky. A uniform blue stripe would cut the composition instead of connecting the two banks.
Documented benchmarks
The National Gallery of Art documents Banks of the Seine, Vétheuil, oil on canvas from 1880, 73.4 × 100.5 cm, inventory 1963.10.177 and catalog Wildenstein 597.
The dated signature appears among the herbs. Its warm color remains visible without suddenly detaching from the flowery foreground.
The painting remained in the Sutton family until the 1933 sale. Chester Dale acquired it there before bequeathing it thirty years later to the National Gallery of Art.
The work is numbered 1963.10.177 and is now on display in the West Building. It belongs to an important group of impressionist paintings brought together by Dale.
