Look at the work

A sunken path that leads the eye to the sea

The trail begins largely at the lower edge, narrows in the center then dives behind the trees. The left embankment descends towards the sea; the one on the right rises sharply. Their diagonals form an X-shaped composition around the central passage.

The herbs combine straw yellow, sage green, orange and purple. The trees form a denser blue-green mass, contrasting with the milky sky and turquoise-gray sea. On the way, pink and blue shadows alternate with the lit areas.

No figure tells the journey: the path itself becomes the invitation, opening the foreground then slipping away as it reaches the sea.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A refined X composition

The two embankments visually intersect with the diagonals of the sky and the passage. The MFA emphasizes that Monet here takes a diagram tested from the 1860s and integrates it into an extremely active surface.

02

The absence of a figure reinforces the geometry

A character would have given an anecdote and an immediate scale. Without human presence, the gaze directly feels the slope, the tightening and the promised opening towards the coast.

03

Materials distinguished by the touch

Short, dry lines in the grass, thicker touches in the trees and horizontal passages in the sea make you feel three different textures without rigid contours.

Read this specific version

A single exact image of W762 is used throughout the file and as the sole media for the product. The real WebP measures 3,000 × 2,215 px, since reduced to a Google Art Project file of 5,426 × 4,007 px without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep the wide path in the foreground

Its opening physically draws the eye into the painting. It must gradually tighten and not form a uniform strip all the way to the sea.

Color02

Preserve the large mass of trees in the center right

It partially blocks perspective and gives all its depth to the path. Lightening it excessively would weaken the contrast with the embankments.

Matter03

Keep pink and blue shadows on the sand

These alternating cold and warm colors reflect the light filtered by the vegetation. A uniform beige path would lose the vibration of W762.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston documents Road at La Cavée, Pourville, oil on canvas from 1882, 60.3 × 81.6 cm, inventory 24.1755 and catalog Wildenstein 762.

Location01

La Cavée descends from the cliffs towards Pourville beach

Monet painted several views of this steep path during his Norman campaign of 1882. It varied the point of observation, the orientation of the format and the way in which the sea appeared at the outlet.

Group02

Four Chemins de La Cavée sold in Durand-Ruel

A letter documented by the MFA indicates that Monet sold four paintings bearing this title to the Durand-Ruel gallery on October 10, 1882; the gallery sold them in 1883.

Collection03

The legacy of Susan Mason Loring

The painting enters the Museum of Fine Arts thanks to the bequest of Mrs. Susan Mason Loring. It bears the number 24.1755 and the signature Claude Monet 82 at the bottom right.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 762 version
  • The sandy path which goes down towards the English Channel
  • The X-shaped composition formed by the two embankments
  • The blue-green trees that hide part of the horizon

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This horizontal landscape is suitable for a living room, hallway or office. A sand, olive green or gray blue wall and a natural setting accompany the depth of the path without competing with the light of the sea.
