On the coast at Trouville W687hand painted reproduction

On a slope overlooking the sea, a tree bent by the wind stands out among the grass. The English Channel forms a wide blue-gray band under a clear sky, while a few red and yellow accents punctuate the terrain. Painted in 1881, this 60.7 × 81.3 cm oil on canvas is kept at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston under number 19.1314 and corresponds to Wildenstein 687.

Look at the work

An inclined tree measures the wind on the Normandy coast

The green terrain occupies the entire foreground and descends towards the sea. The tree, slightly off-center, tilts its trunk to the left while its foliage spreads above the slope. The distant coast appears very low on the right.

Greens, turquoise and blues overlap in grass and water. The sky is treated in wider, paler passages. A few flowers and warm touches prevent the foreground from becoming a uniform mass.

The tree is not a simple isolated pattern: its oblique trunk makes visible the wind that travels the slope, the grass and the surface of the sea.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

An oblique axis in the center of the landscape

The trunk breaks the large horizontals of the shore and the horizon. This inclination gives immediate tension to an otherwise very open view.

02

A sea reduced to an atmospheric band

Water does not occupy the foreground; it appears behind the meadow and approaches the sky with its blue and gray values.

03

A denser touch in the vegetation

The foliage and grasses receive small superimposed touches, while the distance is painted more widely. This contrast builds depth.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The Museum of Fine Arts' only reference image is preserved at its native definition of 1,200 × 879 px and then encoded as a real WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Maintain precise shaft tilt

Trunk direction and asymmetrical crown spreading are essential to the wind impression specific to W687.

Color02

Preserve the thin rib on the right

This small, distant relief places the view along the coastline without closing the opening of the sea.

Matter03

Keep the accents red in the meadow

They must remain rare and irregular in order to liven up the greens without transforming the soil into a flowery field.
