A surface without shore or direct sky
The museum emphasizes that, in Water Lilies after 1905, water can fill the entire composition. Here, no external reference points set the distance; only the leaves allow space to be measured.

Claude Monet · 1914 -1917 · Gunma 2383 · W1794
Large blue-green leaves float in the lower half, while the top opens with pink and blue highlights. In this vertical canvas from 1914 -1917 kept at the Gunma Museum, the surface of the pool completely fills the field. The water no longer separates the patterns: it brings together leaves, flowers, sky and reflected vegetation.

Look at the work
The water lilies in the foreground are wide, irregular and sometimes cut by the lower edge. Their green varies from turquoise to olive, with purple covers. A few pink and white flowers bring points of light without forming an alignment.
Higher up, the shapes disperse and the reflection becomes dominant. Blue and green vertical gestures cross a gray pink background, then break on contact with the leaves. The composition thus alternates dense areas and colored breathing.
The pool is no longer a mirror placed under the landscape: it becomes the entire landscape, crossed by several depths at the same time.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The museum emphasizes that, in Water Lilies after 1905, water can fill the entire composition. Here, no external reference points set the distance; only the leaves allow space to be measured.
Nearby leaves are wider and more contrasting. Their scale sets up the foreground, while smaller patterns and light reflections move the top back.
Blue and green often follow vertical gestures; pink circulates in the intervals. Preserving these orientations avoids a uniform decorative surface.
Reference image
The single reference documentary image measures 864 × 1,200 px. It was converted into a real WebP without artificial enlargement; no false details were created for the zoom.
The 131.5 × 95.5 cm format raises the gaze from nearby leaves to a lighter area. The gaps between the patterns are essential for this progression.
No color should dominate alone. Cool tones give depth, while pink warms the water and distinguishes flowers from reflections.
Leaves and flowers require more material than water passages. This difference gives relief without transforming each shape into a thick outline.
Documented benchmarks
This information concerns the Water Lilies of the Museum of Modern Art, Gunma, resource 2383 and Wildenstein 1794.
The museum dates this oil on canvas from 1914 -1917 and gives dimensions of 131.5 × 95.5 cm. The catalog raisonné records it under number 1794.
The work belongs to the Gunma Prefectural Museum in Takasaki. Its collection base identifies it with resource 2383 and documents its original technique, oil on canvas.
The national Art Platform Japan sheet indicates a workshop stamp in the lower right corner, consistent with the posthumous provenance of several large late paintings.
