A tree-covered island occupies the right of the canvas and is reflected in an almost motionless Seine. On the left, a wide opening of sky and water dilutes the landscape in pearly blues, pinks and grays. Monet painted this view in 1897 near Vernon, not far from where the Epte joins the Seine and where he moors his boats.

The mass of the trees dissolves in the mist while the water regains its colors in vertical touches

The plant group forms an ascending diagonal from the lower bank, in the center, to the top on the right. The greens remain very pale and mingle with blue, mauve and pink. No dark outline clearly separates the trees from the sky.

The reflection descends below the island in short, vertical gestures, then fades towards the bottom of the canvas. On the left, a few horizontal touches are enough to suggest the distant shore. This large, light area balances the vegetation without becoming empty.

Monet constructs the island's presence with colors almost as light as the air around him.
