Creuse Valley, evening effect W1225hand painted reproduction

At the end of the day, the Creuse winds between purple, red and green slopes whose reflections darken the water. Painted in Fresselines in 1889, this oil on canvas measuring 65 × 81 cm is kept at the Marmottan Monet museum and corresponds to Wildenstein 1225.

Look at the work

The river collects the last colors of the evening

A nearby slope descends from the left; the large opposite slope occupies the center and pushes the river to the right. The watercourse then turns towards the bottom, between two masses which almost close the horizon.

Purple, blue, dark green and red-brown dominate the valley. A few pink and cream passages light up the slopes and the sky. The water does not reflect a uniform surface: it takes up in fragments the colors of the two banks.

In W1225, the evening effect is not based on visible sunlight, but on the deep agreement of purples, reds and blues.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A ravine built by interlocking

The slopes overlap and lead to a narrow passage at the bottom. The curve of the river maintains a luminous path between these masses.

02

Colorful shadows

Dark areas mix purple, green and blue rather than black. This richness retains the vibration of the landscape despite the weak light.

03

The series as a method

Monet works on several views of the Creuse under different effects. W1225 sets a precise moment when the contrasts decrease without erasing the relief.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W1225 is used. The real WebP measures 1024 × 788 px and retains the colorful variations of the ravine without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Preserve the curve of the river

It must remain readable from the foreground to the bottom. Too uniform water would make the steep movement of the valley disappear.

Color02

Keep the reds on the slopes

The rust and pink touches respond to the purples. Removing them would make the evening effect colder and less faithful.

Matter03

Avoid black in shadows

The deep passages are composed of superimposed colors. A covering black would block the internal light of the impressionist touch.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Marmottan Monet museum preserves Vallée de la Creuse, evening effect, oil on canvas from 1889, 65 × 81 cm, listed Wildenstein 1225.

Campaign01

La Creuse in the spring of 1889

Monet settled in Fresselines and painted around twenty-four landscapes of ravines, rivers and confluences under changing weather conditions.

Method02

Several canvases for several effects

The painter keeps different supports in progress and chooses the one which corresponds to the state of light encountered, continuing a method which announces his major series.

Version03

The evening effect W1225

The dark curve of the river and the purple, red and green accord identify this version, distinct from views taken in sun or overcast weather.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1225 version
  • The dark river that turns in the ravine
  • Purple, red and green slopes
  • The diffused light of the end of the day
