Look at the work

Sunny trail leads the eye to the Mediterranean

The clear path starts from the foreground, turns around a rock then narrows towards the center. A tiny walker casts a very short shadow there: this detail confirms a high light and gives the scale of the landscape.

The reds of the ground, the greens of the pines and the blues of the sea remain separated into visible touches. In the distance, the cape blends into the atmosphere while the foreground retains sharper contrasts.

W890 transforms a cornice road into a luminous route: the curve of the path catches the eye before releasing it towards the sea and the horizon.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A perspective guided by the road

The trail is not just a local pattern. Its decreasing width, its bend and the small figure build the depth of the foreground to the distant shore.

02

An almost vertical sun

The Rijksmuseum draws attention to the brevity of the walker's shadow. The light colors of the path and the shards on the foliage give the sensation of a very high Mediterranean sun.

03

The precise version of the Rijksmuseum

The 75 × 94 cm format, the SK-A-1892 inventory, the Claude Monet 84 signature and the Wildenstein 890 reference identify this canvas among the patterns painted around Monaco and Cape Martin.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one reference image is used. The exact high definition scanning of SK-A-1892 is converted to a true 3000 × 2390 px WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A clear curve in the middle of the masses

The path must remain legible without becoming uniform white. Its pinks, yellows, blues and ochres respond to the rocks and maintain the colorful unity of the painting.

Color02

Complementaries in direct sunlight

The reds and oranges of the soil intensify the greens; the blue sea cools the bottom. Monet achieves brilliance by proximity of colors rather than by large monochrome areas.

Matter03

Vegetation built in short touches

Pines, bushes and grasses are distinguished by their direction and density. A material that is too smoothed would eliminate the luminous quivering that animates the edges of the path.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Rijksmuseum preserves La Corniche near Monaco, oil on canvas from 1884, 75 × 94 cm, inventory SK-A-1892 and Wildenstein 890.

Location01

An old mountain track

In Monet's time, the corniche was still a narrow path. The route today corresponds to the road linking Nice and Monaco, but the canvas retains its rural and steep appearance.

Acquisition02

Entered the Rijksmuseum in 1900

Baroness van Lynden-van Pallandt donated the painting to the museum in 1900, when Monet's work was still little known in the Netherlands.

Presentation03

Visible in gallery 1.18

The Rijksmuseum currently presents the painting in gallery 1.18. The number SK-A-1892 remains its institutional reference.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version SK-A-1892, Wildenstein 890
  • The curve of the path and its progressive narrowing
  • The little figure and its midday shadow
  • Reds, greens and blues held in luminous touches
