A low islet stands out in the middle of the Seine, covered with willows whose round foliage catches the sun. The blue sky fills with pink and cream clouds; their colors descend into the water, mixed with the blues and mauves of the current. Monet transforms a very simple pattern into a vast study of light.
Look at the work
The trees on the islet form a succession of rounded masses just below the center line. A darker bank closes the composition to the right, while a passage of water opens the left side. The sky occupies a large area and its clouds give a rhythm that responds to the crowns of the trees.
The foreground combines cobalt blue, mauve and salmon pink in horizontal touches. On the islet, the deep greens receive yellow and almost white flashes which make the foliage sparkle. The sky takes up the roses of the sandbank and the water, connecting the entire composition.
W1263 makes an islet without a monument a monumental subject: space is held together by the color responses between clouds, foliage, shore and current.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The Musée d'Orsay preserves the work under the main title La Seine à Port-Villez and the inventory title L'Îlot (Seine à Port-Villez). This second designation describes exactly the group of low trees which structures the center of the canvas.
The museum notice places the painting around 1890. It measures 65.5 × 92.5 cm and bears Monet's signature at the bottom left. The Wildenstein catalog raisonné records it under number 1263.
Durand-Ruel acquired Monet's work in December 1892. Count Isaac de Camondo bought it in 1893, then bequeathed it to the State in 1911. After the Louvre and the Jeu de Paume, it was assigned to the Musée d' Orsay in 1986.

The single reference photograph measures 4,881 × 3,411 px. It was cropped at the edge of the canvas, reduced to 3,200 px and converted into a real WebP, without artificial enlargement.
Willows chain together like an irregular frieze. Their height remains modest so that the sky and water each retain a significant presence around the islet.
The palette combines bold colors without losing atmospheric unity. The pink touches circulate from the sky to the shore, then to the reflection, while the greens are lit with bright yellows.
The trees are built by superimposing short, curved touches. The sky is more open and the water more horizontal. These differences in gesture give each element its own material.

This oil on canvas dated around 1890 measures 65.5 × 92.5 cm. It is signed lower left and also bears the inventory title L'Îlot (Seine in Port-Villez).
The work enters the national collections with the Camondo legacy. She moved from the Louvre Museum to the Jeu de Paume before being assigned to the Musée d'Orsay, where she was registered under number RF 2009.
Port-Villez is located in Yvelines, on a sector of the river that Monet painted several times. Here, the lack of construction focuses attention on the current, the lower bank, the trees and the changes in the sky.
