Meadow in Giverny, autumn effect W1083hand painted reproduction

A green meadow rises towards a border of trees with yellow, pink and orange leaves. A young vertical trunk marks the center, while a denser tree cuts the entire right edge; in the foreground, long bands of shadow undulate in the grass. Painted in 1886, this 92.1 × 81.6 cm oil on canvas is preserved at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston under number 39.670 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1083.

Look at the work

The meadow becomes a vast surface of greens crossed by the shadows of autumn

The vertical format gives an unusual scale to the foreground. The slope occupies almost two thirds of the canvas, then a low edge closes the view; the thin tree in the center and the large foliage on the right connect this expanse of grass to the pale sky.

The greens change from acidic yellow to deep blue without following a regular pattern. Touches of pink and mauve appear in the shadows of the meadow, while the trees at the bottom mix orange, cream and muted red under diffused light.

Monet does not fill the meadow with anecdotes: he makes his slope, his gray areas and his changes of green the real event of the painting.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A deliberately immense foreground

The large surface of grass brings the viewer closer to the ground and delays the arrival of the gaze at the edge. Touch variations replace any path or figure to lead towards the bottom.

02

Two trees with different functions

The thin trunk in the center gives a vertical measurement, while the foliage cut to the right acts as a close curtain. Their imbalance avoids too symmetrical a composition.

03

Shadows that remain colorful

Dark bands never turn gray. They contain blue, purple and cool green, which maintains the feeling of light reflected from the sky.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The only reference photograph is kept at its native definition of 1,410 × 1,600 px then encoded in real WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Preserve the large proportion of meadow

The edge should remain high in the image. Bringing it closer to the center would reduce the immersion effect and the particularity of the vertical format of W1083.

Color02

Preserve irregular shadow bands

They follow the slope without forming parallel stripes. Their flexible contours give the ground its relief and the direction of light.

Matter03

Keep tree straight partially cut

The pink and green foliage of the right edge is an essential foreground; it frames the meadow without completely enclosing it.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston documents Meadow at Giverny, also listed as Prairie in Giverny, Autumn Effect, Oil on Canvas from 1886, Inventory 39,670 and Wildenstein 1083.

Installation01

Giverny, where Monet has lived since 1883

Before transforming his garden into a major motif, the artist travels the meadows, paths and edges around his house and observes their seasonal evolution.

Reduced series02

One of the meadow landscapes painted in 1886

Several paintings take up this rural corner under different frames and lights. The vertical format and the importance of the carpet of grass distinguish the Boston version.

Collection03

Legacy of Juliana Cheney Edwards in 1939

The work entered the Museum of Fine Arts with the Juliana Cheney Edwards Collection and received inventory number 39.670.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1083 version
  • Long colored shadows in the grass
  • The vertical sapling in the center
  • The pink and yellow autumn edge

A palette designed with the room

This vertical landscape is suitable for an entrance, bedroom or narrow living room wall. An olive green, gray pink or ivory background and a light frame extend its balance between plant freshness and autumn colors.
